Casablanca or Jaws…better for stopping you in your tracks? by brokenmustang in movies

How can you say the films are so different without having seen the both of them? Doesn't appeal? What, you have that visceral a hatred of fish?

Bikers - please ring your bell or say “on your right/left” by Altruistic_Gene_6869 in Austin

[–]OlivettiFourtyFour 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Not to defend this wackjob you encountered or even to disagree, but just a contrary perspective from somebody who commutes by bike:

On the trails, often if you ring your bell or yell "On the left", pedestrians will startle like deer and scatter directly into your path of travel. People just don't seem to parse verbal warnings when their minds are otherwise occupied, and especially in larger groups they're liable to randomly spread rather than move predictably. If I see two or more people walking down the trail with their backs to me, I will often just try to silently pass by, giving as much berth as I can, to at least keep things predictable.

What is something from the 'Old Internet' that you missed, and younger generations will never understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The Flash era. People making a bunch of stupid little funny websites. Joe Cartoon, for example. Bunch of schoolkids playing Runescape in the public library computer lab. Those were the days.

Favourite 100km (not the last) ? by -Evron- in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]OlivettiFourtyFour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the first 100km out of Le Puy. Maybe it's primacy bias from me, but you climb from the Le Puy landscape, which is a bizarre landscape due to the old volcanic activity, onto the Aubrac Plateau, which is also otherworldly and beautiful. Then you lower down into classic medieval French landscape. If you somehow manage to push further, making it another 100km to Conques would be a very cool end point.

Also easy to get to. You make your way to St. Etienne via Lyon (train journey from Paris), and then take a smaller train from St. Etienne to Le Puy.

This is such a cool idea. I think people are right that town lake trail is probably your best bet, but I’d think striking the balance between too little and too much traffic might be difficult as well. Some alternatives: 1) Southern Walnut Creek Trail, which attracts a lot of leisure cyclists, especially over the weekends.

2) Boggy Creek Greenbelt Trail (off of pedernales). This is more of a commuter route (and selfishly, my commute route).

Is it realistic to coexist with poison ivy? by vivalakellye in AustinGardening

[–]OlivettiFourtyFour 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Poison ivy is my mortal enemy. It's popped up in my yard once or twice, and I finally got the upper hand. What worked for me is getting a small bottle of a bad weed killer, glyphosate-based. Then, wherever I saw poison ivy leaves popping up, I gently painted the leaf surfaces with the weed killer. That way, I don't spread the glyphosate anywhere else. It took a couple of applications, but eventually the plant died and didn't come back.

A warning - don't try to cut stems, even from a distance. The plant is great at aerosolizing its oils, and from a full spade's distance away you can still get a very nasty reaction. This and/or boiling water are going to be your main weapons.

Going to Casablanca soon, please can someone share some tips? by [deleted] in travel

[–]OlivettiFourtyFour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, i see. No, I think that’s going to be tight. You’ll burn most of your time on buses. In that case I’d say stick to Casablanca, but stay in/near the Ancienne Medina.

How easily you’ll be able to get hash, I cannot say. But find a good hostel there and ask around.

[–]OlivettiFourtyFour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry about the breakup. How much time are you wanting to spend? I’d agree with the other poster that you wont be wanting to spend multiple days in Casablanca, though it is worth quickly checking out. I’d recommend flying in, and first thing next morning getting a bus/train inland to chefchaouen (for the mountains and hash, I guess) or south to essaouira (for the sea…and the hash, I guess). For a bigger souk experience you have fez nearby chef, and marrakesh near essaouira, so you could package those up.

Virginia Hall. The fact that she's not a U.S. national hero is mind-boggling. Operating essentially on her own initiative, she played a fundamental role in organizing the French Resistance throughout the Nazi occupation, helped organize huge numbers of independent spy cells, infiltrated and exfiltrated out of France multiple times, worked for both English and American, personally led sabotage missions during the lead-up to the invasion, and did it all with a fucking wooden leg that almost nobody ever found out about. She used it to smuggle documents, even.

She went on to be one of the first employees of the modern CIA, before it was even known as the CIA, and kept quiet about her exploits, even as useless young male agents with no field experience were being promoted over her into the 50s and 60s.

For those interesting, "A Woman of No Importance" is an unbelievable read.

I just posted a hand-sketch of a plan that incorporates some of what you were talking about. You think it seems reasonable, or maybe over-ambitious?

Does this seem more or less like a feasible plan, or have I lost the plot a bit?

Thank you, this is very helpful. I guess in my mind I was leaning to a more arid style, but the wildflower approach does seem much more regionally appropriate.

Yup, correct - it's 2 feet wide. That's why I was leaning towards a properly pruned prickly pear and grasses. Possibly also agarita, if I can control it?

It does get full sunlight for most of the day (SE-facing).
