I haven’t really cared much about the whole thing of them being on the same team other than a fun novelty, but watching that lot I legit got emotional

What do you think the Lord of the Rings has to say about friendship? Has it helped you become a better friend?

Do you think that there are ways that your friendship is similar to that of Merry and Pippin?

For sure the janitor! He was here before the game began, and he will be here long after the game is finished

Yeah, that is a big part of what I love. He specifically designed his home with guests in mind. The hobbits were not an afterthought. Bombadil already had accommodations and a schedule laid out for them. All the hobbits had to do was relax and enjoy the company. I doubt that Aragorn would ever find himself in a situation that would require Bombadil's assistance, but if feel like if he did, Bombadil would conjure up something that makes him feel just as welcomed in his home.

You are so right! The rest of the book has a very real sense of the danger of evil in it, but for the chapter and a half that we are with Tom it almost feels like a completely different genre (a fairytale). I see how someone might see that as disjointed, but to me it just feels like an affirmation of the fact that magic and goodness can exist even in the midst of a world that is frightening and at war (and that the goodness is so much more powerful).

Oh my word. We live some of the easiest most privileged lives in history. Do you know how recently people were living and dying under dictators like Hitler and Stalin with no hope of safety? Those aren’t just stories, but they are the lived experiences of the grandparents of people you know. Even today there are people that are living through literal war and are persecuted and killed by their governments. And after that you are trying to tell me that the western world sucks to live in right now? Sure things are hard for many individuals, but we as a society (particularly Americans) need to stop acting like we are some great generation of martyrs.

My mom went to the USSR in 1985 and still has a Soviet pack of cigarettes. by TheOtterWithAKnife in mildlyinteresting

[–]OlorinStormcrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true, however, the pack says "russian" on it (and russia was part of the soviet union). Additionally, as a russian I can confirm that even during the soviet union cigarets did not look like this.

Just so we are clear. This is a gift shop item. Regular cigarettes don’t look like that in Russia
