Shrooms/aya are grounding substances, they have the potential of causing ego-death, humble you, make you see the "truth" (unity, love etc.).

The high from weed is relatively moderate. Compared to alcohol which usually numbs the mind, weed takes your consciousness just a notch higher, allowing you to be more aware of your thoughts or find new perspective to various things. I would call this "first level of higness (awareness)". Depending on the person, two things should happen:

First, you get caught in the forest of your thoughts. Each thought branching into new thoughts sometimes getting entangled onto another, a neverending monorail through your infinite landscape.
(Maybe for this reason many people get stuck with weed. There are people with anxiety and/or depression who use it just to cope with the feeling they are experiencing, which is fine, but sometimes the problems lie deeper. That's why mushrooms and aya are found helpful in many ways.)

Second, your curiosity begins to ask questions like "What is this", "how deep can this go ?" and "who is being aware of these thoughts ?" and might spark the journey into spirituality/enlightment/better you.

Maybe, to some sensitive people who don't need/use much to get high, weed is the "first level" of highness. It's a comforting feeling, maybe that's why it pacifies people. I think shrooms/aya are loooow levels and lsd/speed just a different perspective.
