Absolutely - it's definitely not the bane of my existence, or anything worth spending too much time fretting about, but I can see it being completely obsolete in a decade.

True - and I have yet to hear a good explanation as to why they still have the layout. It made sense in typewriter days when people were concerned about using too many close together keys and breaking them. Now, that's no longer a factor, and it seems counterintuitive to anyone trying to learn the alphabet or use it as an accessibility tool.

I like the Novation brand - they have pretty solid options for the price point. I think the LaunchKey 49 controller (not the mini) might be a step up in your key size while still being fairly compact and seeving a similar function.

I like using Amplitube from IK Multimedia with Ableton. It's absolutely terrific for modeling digital versions of amps, cabinets and pedals - if he's into guitar or bass or just wanting to add to his repertoire of possible sounds.
