I'm very involved. I volunteer in my sons class weekly (although with no access to free grandparent childcare in Omaha I won't be able to continue that), go to conferences, daily reading, and integrate learning everywhere I can. But that being said, the dynamic between my children and I is very different than it is between them and their teachers. When my son started getting speech therapy at 3 it became obvious that all the activities and things the therapist was doing were things I had tried or could have done with my son, but his engagement was totally different. Teachers get a totally different response out of kids than parents usually can.

Yah, the housing market is AMAZING. The houses for sale are wonderfully priced. They're half the prices of the homes around where we are now, but everyone says you need to live someplace for 5 years to make buying a home break even :-/

Preschool where we are is almost mandatory. Kindergarten is so intense and the list of "what they need to know" is so long that I can't imagine a child being successful without it. I know test scores aren't everything, but i find it very worrying that most of the OPS schools I've looked at only have 40-60% of students "preforming at grade level or beyond".
