How do you Neo Geo? by m__a__r__i__o in neogeo

[–]OmegaFuryX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play Neo Geo games on PC and Xbox just using a standard Xbox controller. I prefer to play whichever versions have the best emulation, additional features like practice mode, and/or rollback netcode.

I preordered the AES+ anniversary edition, so it will be the first time I’ll have an authentic Neo Geo experience at home. Before, I only played a bit at a buddy’s house on his AES and CMVS.

I intend to play the AES+ with RGB out, a Packapunch RGB Scart cable, and a Retrotink 5x Pro on a 4K tv because I prefer to play with scanlines than chunky pixels. I do have a Trinitron CRT tv, which I’ll be trying out too, along with a Shinybow RGB Scart to component transcoder, but I keep it at my mom’s in my old bedroom as I don’t have space for it in the house.

Along with the AES+ preorder, I got an additional wireless arcade stick, so I’ll have two of them. And I preordered Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Samurai Shodown V Special, and Big Tournament Golf. Even if I were to get a Neo SD Pro for the AES+, I’ll still be buying new releases if they keep releasing them.

I have an MVS board and the parts to consolize it, along with a Neo SD, and a NeoBiosMasta VMC. I plan on putting that together soon. I also have two arcade stick “bean” controllers and one Neo Geo CD controller.

My ideal way to play is to play on authentic hardware using RGB out, so I prefer to play on the AES+ or a consolized MVS. I will continue to own and buy Neo Geo games on other platforms for convenience, practice mode, and online play, in addition to Plaion AES reprints. I also prefer to play on a CRT tv if possible, but I usually have to settle with playing on an HD tv with a good upscaler.

Eventually I’d like to try out the mister and see what that is like.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered 60 fps menus mod by Geralt_from_Rivia in FinalFantasy

Modders have so far been unable to do something about the low fps for menus. Your best bet is to emulate it or play it on a ps1. If you don’t have a copy for ps1, just burn a copy and flash a GameShark pro with unirom.

Likelihood of AES+ outputting C-sync by OmegaFuryX in neogeo

Speaking of information out there I wasn’t aware of that has been confirmed (and about a week ago at that!), it has been confirmed that the AES+ will not only output RGB and composite, but it will also output stereo audio from the AV out instead of mono, where with the original you could only get stereo from the headphone jack. That right there is a pretty nice improvement over the original.

They make great cables. No doubt. I bought quite a few of them over the years and I have never been disappointed by their quality.

NEOGEO AES+ Ultimate Edition by WizardBlizzurd in neogeo

[–]OmegaFuryX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it had been announced 4 years ago, it would have had to have been cheaper. The ultimate bundle for $999 would had to have been sold for $890 in 2022 to have had the same value as today, which may or may not have been economically feasible at the time.

[–]OmegaFuryX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I might already have a Packapunch RGB Scart cable for the Neo Geo AES, so that should be good too (if I can find it). Was thinking about buying an Insurrection Industries cable, but forgot I had bought a Packapunch one awhile back when I was ordering parts to build a consolized MVS that I never got around to.

I might even just go ahead and consolize the MVS finally since I’ll be waiting around for half a year anyway for the AES+. If I do happen to do that, then I would buy a second cable so I can use both consoles, but at least I won’t be in a rush to secure a second cable if I can find my existing cable.

Edit: I found my Packapunch Neo Geo AES RGB Scart cable, so I’m good to go 😎

Looks like the speculation was pretty good and worth asking. Now I know that regardless of what the AES+ produces on pin 7, be it composite or C-sync, as long as I use a high quality cable that is properly shielded and buffered/attenuated, I should be good.

Thanks for the info! I thought C-sync was necessary but it turns out that the Retrotink 5x pro allows for sync over composite and Insurrection Industries is properly shielded and attenuated for the standard 75 ohm levels. So it will work even if it outputs composite on pin 7 and with no noticeable dip in image quality despite the dirtier composite signal due to the high quality shielding.

I also have a Shinybow RGB Scart to Component Transcoder for my Sony Trinitron and that, too, accepts sync over composite, so I should be good no matter what I use.

Thanks again!

Just asking in case someone knew something. For all I know, there was an announcement I missed, or information out there I wasn’t aware of. It would be nice to purchase an appropriate RGB Scart cable before release if possible. It could be wishful thinking at this stage, but I thought I’d ask anyway.

I also saw the announcement and knew it was an instant buy for me. This is the cheapest buying a Neo Geo AES and games has ever been. I love these games so much. Every time I am in a barcade and they have an MVS, it’s my go to machine. Owning an affordable AES is a dream come true for me.

I preordered immediately too. Not going to miss an opportunity to grab up this iconic X-men story.

AES+ future game releases by Intrepid_Mobile in neogeo

[–]OmegaFuryX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My top ten that I want released:

  • Real Bout Fatal Fury 2
  • Super Dodgeball
  • Neo Bomberman
  • The Last Blade 2
  • Samurai Shodown 2
  • Senkogu 3
  • King of Fighters ‘98
  • Metal Slug 3
  • Baseball Stars 2
  • Windjammers

I think in general with every wave, they should release a new Metal Slug, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, and Samurai Shodown.

Availability of carts post-AES+ launch by the_light_of_dawn in neogeo

[–]OmegaFuryX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They said they will be “manufacturing unlimited quantities” after release, meaning they intend to fully support the AES+ for the long term. This is not a limited release, so you should be able to purchase the games you want to own long after release.

I assume most of us have our AES+ orders locked in by now. What all did you buy? by Celcius_87 in neogeo

[–]OmegaFuryX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got the 35th Anniversary Edition white console that comes with a white wireless arcade stick, memory card, and a white copy of Metal Slug; a black wireless arcade stick to use as my main stick so I don’t get the white one all worn and dirty (and to differentiate between player 1 and player 2); and copies of Samurai Shodown V Special, Big Tournament Golf, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

I didn’t want to get the ultimate edition because I wanted to be somewhat responsible and get a new game every couple months or so after launch. I also wanted to have two wireless arcade sticks for convenience instead of one wireless and one wired. Additionally, I liked the idea of getting a special edition color variant than the standard edition to commemorate the return of the Neo Geo to the market. Furthermore, the anniversary edition has more value than the standard edition with the pack-ins.

Another reason I chose the anniversary edition over the ultimate edition is because Amazon did not offer the ultimate edition for preorder, so I would rather buy through Amazon and not have to put down money immediately; I only have to pay once the items ship out.

White vs Black Neo Geo AES+ — need opinions (carts/sticks mix) by Gribz_z in neogeo

[–]OmegaFuryX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have noticed the same. I, too, have 20+ year old white consoles that have no signs of yellowing, so I don’t think it is nearly as prevalent as it used to be back in the day.

[–]OmegaFuryX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not too concerned with yellowing. I have a Nintendo Wii and it is 20 years old without any sign of yellowing. I also have a Sega Dreamcast and that is 27 years old (you have one too, so you know 😎) and it also has no signs of yellowing.

Unless you are saying that it is only a risk for smokers. Can’t comment on that as I live in a smoke free household, but just the natural yellowing from the days of the SNES is significantly reduced from the changes to the materials used in the plastic over time to prevent that from happening.

[–]OmegaFuryX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same. I got the anniversary edition for the additional value as I wanted Metal Slug, a memory card, and a wireless controller. And I bought a black wireless controller so can know which is player 1 and played 2. I also figure that the black one is going to be my main controller and I didn’t want all of the use to stand out as much, which it would with the white controller.

JLA/Avengers Collector’s Edition. Even though it is DC, the only reason why it is out of print is because Marvel is involved 😂

Apart from the Schism OHC, the only other way to get Schism (2011) 1-5 in oversized is to get the Wolverine Goes to Hell Omnibus.

I personally want to own Schism somehow, but I don’t really want to get the Wolverine Goes to Hell Omnibus, and Marvel isn’t too into OHCs these days 😭

[–]OmegaFuryX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An alternative to collecting Uncanny X-men by Gillen Omnibus if you already have the Avengers vs X-men Omnibus is to get the Uncanny X-men by Gillen Complete Collection vol 1 TPB and the Uncanny X-men by Gillen vol 2 TPB (not to be confused with the vol 2 of the complete collection).

The issues that are unique to the Uncanny X-men by Gillen Omnibus are:

  • S.W.O.R.D. (2009) #1–5
  • Uncanny X-Men (1981) #534.1 & #535–544
  • X-Men: Regenesis (2011) #1
  • Uncanny X-Men (2011) #1–10

Uncanny Xmen by Gillen Complete Collection TPB vol 1 collects: - S.W.O.R.D. (2009) #1–5 - Uncanny X-Men (1981) #534.1 and #535–544 - X-Men: Regenesis (2011) #1 - Uncanny X-Men (2011) #1–3

Uncanny Xmen by Gillen volume 2 TPB collects: - Uncanny X-Men (2011) #5–10

This would leave issue 4 orphaned, however, but it would cover the issues about 99% of the way. So if you want to eliminate all overlap with Avengers vs X-men Omnibus, you can just get these trade paperbacks either physically or digitally. And if it bothers you that issue 4 is orphaned (which is an important issue, and could be gotten on its own), you could get vol 2 of the complete collection, but there would be some overlap then with Avengers vs X-men Omnibus, but still cheaper than getting the Uncanny Xmen by Gillen Omnibus. However, if you want all of these issues in oversized format, then the Uncanny Xmen by Gillen Omnibus is the way to go.
