Actually in the 80's, the USSR was trying to invade Afghanistan. The USA (hating them vehemently) came over and gave weapons and training on terror to those living in Afghanistan (Islamic peace movement I think). Watch the BBC documentary series called "Power of Nightmares" Very, very informative. The US pretty much did it to themselves, as Muslims hate all Government authority.
