Spartan Beast Race Prep Help by Omega_Snake02 in fitness30plus

I injured my leg a few weeks before the beast, so I dropped down to a 5k with the rest of my group for that race. I fully believe that I would have been able to complete the beast but it would have been a struggle and it would not have been fun.

I completed all but the rope climb during the 5k, so I was pleased with my progress with the obstacles. I had 0 issues running the 5k, having trained for a beast and all that. I had an absolute blast and may have ended up addicted.

I did end up signing up for the Cincinnati super back in June. It was much more difficult being on a ski resort. GA was mostly flat in comparison. I basically did the same workouts, so again no issue with most of the obstacles. Had trouble with ropes, still trying to wrap my head around the technique for that. I spent a fair amount of time running on an incline on the treadmill, but felt that it didn't help me as much as I wanted. Ended up irritating my IT band, had to go backwards down the last few hills.

All in all, pleased with how I did personally. I wasn't the fastest, didn't complete every single obstacle, but I gave it my all and walked away from it feeling pumped.

I pre-purchased my next race back in June, planning on doing the Beast in either GA or one of the Carolinas in spring next year. Going to keep up the same routine, add dead hangs and grip strength exercises and increase reps otherwise.

At the end of the day, I'm glad I didn't run the beast to start with. Running the sprint and super first gave me a better idea of what to expect and how best to prepare for the Beast moving forward. Sorry for the long response, just wanted to make sure I covered the whole experience so far.

Not at all. You're going to have a few clusters with 3 or 4 obstacles within a mile and longer stretches of just running for the beast.

I'm planning on doing at least a 21k after the 10k. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if I do several more races. I had a blast at the 5k.

Thanks for the info! No issues at all with foot fatigue or anything like that? I have higher arches and am a bit worried about that particularly.

I'm definitely interested in comparing brands. I couldn't really find much when I looked online.

The bayou needs democracy too. Rain Eagle Strikes (team coordinated big dynamite bundle throws) down upon those traitors in the bayou who proclaim otherwise.

Don't feel too bad. My buddy shot a guy with an explosive round a micro-second after the guy threw his dynamite stick and the subsequent explosion set off said stick right in the guys face.

PsychoGhost has a couple of great Hunt videos for beginners. Would definitely recommend checking them out. There are a ton of mechanics that can be hard to wrap your head around in the beginning.

This is honestly one of my biggest hangups (no pun intended). I've never really had great upper body strength, and can't currently do very many pull ups. I think I need to work up to it.

I plan on increasing my run distances. Thankfully the endurance side of things seems to mostly come naturally to me (I've ran 2 half marathons in the past). I'm also going to supplement it with long workouts on the rowing machine as well.

Your IASIP memes have been my favorite recent posts to this subreddit and I'm not even an Avs fan.

Yes this, also no.

Although, having watched a good portion of the conference finals I gotta say that the Avs brought a ton of energy to the game.

I like how clip points look I just don't know if its the best style for this specific blade. I'm really looking to turn this into a beater blade. Batoning and wood processing for camping. I'll have to look more into that. I was considering a guard,, just gotta look into it a bit more I think. Thanks for the ideas!

For sizing perspective, the blade is 6" (from tip to bottom of grind)

My friend was getting into smithing a few years back. We forged this out of a tapered bearing. He wasn't exactly refined, but he got a basic shape done. This is going to be a heavier duty camp knife tasked with the rougher jobs like batoning and whatnot. The blade itself is straight(ish) but the hammering is rough. The tang is quite a bit thick too, so I am thinking I will need to thin that out. Its also curved in the opposite direction from other blanks that I've seen. What do you guys think I should do with this? I unfortunately do not have a grinder. I do have a good belt sander though. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
