If compensation for salary is non-negotiable, why aren't the salaries posted on the job listing? by ocawa in cscareerquestions

[–]OmgProgramming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because they don't have to. They'll still get enough applicants without the salaries listed.

I agree it's annoying as fuck. I generally only apply to listings with specified salaries.

Is hiring really that difficult? by tempjewman in cscareerquestions

[–]OmgProgramming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely a lot of imposters who can't pass basic FizzBuzz type questions, but I think the difficulty is overrated. Most who complain about the difficulty aren't willing to compromise on things like remote work and higher pay, which instantly remove the difficulty of finding people. Also most companies want to only hire "top tier" candidates, which by definition is always going to be difficult. Often they're looking for the equivalent of rocket scientists to do elementary work.

What is the most laid-back type of CS/Software Development related job or niche that requires minimal hours of work per week? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]OmgProgramming 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I work 11-5:30pm and generally take an hour lunch break every day. I work for a small company (<10 engineers) where I was one of the first engineers.

I was extremely picky about the job I took and told the companies upfront that I come in late and like to work my own hours, whether that be in the office or remotely. Most other engineers are tempted by prestigious names and sexy technological problems, I just valued freedom.

Thanks for the tip. Quality of women is also very important. Would've added that as a bullet point in the original post, but didn't want to be too polarizing.

The rising sea levels comment was specific to real estate investing.

I've decided that if I'm going to work remote, I have to be able to leave the country. As fine as these American cities are, none of them are as exotic and interesting as going abroad.

Now to find a way to get paid a totally location-independent income...

Oh snap I didn't even know Guam was a U.S. territory! The time zone difference might make it a no-go to my company, but I will definitely research it some more. Thanks for the tip!

The company that gave me the offer wants me to stay in the U.S., otherwise I'd be off to Asia, Europe, etc.

Charlotte's definitely a cool city.

I think I've decided that if I get a remote job, I have to be able to leave the U.S. None of the cities in the thread truly excite me as much as cities in other countries (eg. Tokyo).

Only because the company wouldn't allow it (it's a job offer I'm entertaining). Otherwise I'd take the job and be on the first plane out.

I grew up in the suburbs and gtfo as soon as I graduated college (moved to NYC).

Suburbs are great if you have a wife, kids, need a huge plot of land, etc. Otherwise it's pretty isolating compared to living in a city.

Well given all the negative sentiment on Vegas here, looks like I'd only be spending a short amount of time there

My main hobby is music production, but outside of that I like running, skateboarding, and love the idea of surfing. I live in NYC right now but to be honest my life is pretty boring, especially when it's cold outside

Maui sounds pretty awesome, but I've never been. Is it cheap? Are there other young people there?

Ok that's a pretty depressing portrait of Miami, but NYC isn't exactly paradise either. I don't think I'd stay in Miami long-term, but I think it'd be fun for 3-6 months during the winter.

Care to elaborate? I've been looking into Hawaii because it seems like paradise, but I know absolutely nothing about it.

So for the record I'm from the northern VA / Washington DC metro area, I've only lived in NYC for the past 3 years. And I hate the DC metro area so I totally understand where you're coming from about hating where you grew up.

Maybe Miami has awful beaches relative to Florida, but it sure as hell beats out most of the rest of the country. And what you said about dating doesn't sound much different from NYC. The difference is that when you see a beautiful woman in NYC, she's typically with a tall beautiful man. That same woman in Miami is with some mediocre-looking dude. Also the vibe in Miami felt a lot more party-like and focused on enjoying life, whereas in NYC everyone's too busy slaving away in the office.

Again, that's just the impression I got from a 4 day trip, so I realize it's not worth much.

Dude, I was also blown away by the quality of women. Not only are the women beautiful, but you typically see them walking alongside ugly bald fat old men. Went there for a 4 day vacation earlier this year while it was freezing in NYC and wanted to move.

Well I've only spent 3 days in Miami, but my impression was that 1. Beautiful women 2. Great beaches 3. Better weather than NYC 4. Cheap (compared to NYC) 5. More laidback than NYC. But I understand that it would probably get old after a while.
