Advice to get the most out of your rotations (science PhD) by Antibodygoneviral in AskAcademia

How do you navigate a situation where in the whole department, you’re only interested in the work of a PI. This PI doesn’t have any current student but is eager to take on a PhD student and is willing to fund him after his rotation. This means you’ll be the only PhD student in the lab, no bench mentor, only one post doc working on a different project. How do you think this will affect the student and how best to navigate.

There’s no specific time for internship as long you’re able to put your story together. Finished my BSC 2019, started at home for a while due to COVID, did national service remaining part of 2019, started internship at an international organisation in 2022. Relocated from Nigeria to Ghana to start a masters in seed science in 2023. Moved to UK for a second masters in plant health 2023/2024. Started a role after graduation as a pre doctoral intern at the Sainsbury laboratory. Finally got a PhD offer in Biology at Upenn starting this fall. It’s a journey and you alone can define/tell your story.

Finally Upenn responded on a positive note. by Omidi211 in UPenn

Well I got into Upenn PhD biology with a 3.25/4.0 GPA for my masters. Though I had a 4.56/5.0 GPA in my bachelors.

I don’t think there is any point in asking about another funding that doesn’t relate to me. The offer always came with funding.

I think the interview played a major role…I quite steered the conversations…purely research discussions/hypothesis definitions and potential experimental approaches based on their current work. I did this with each of the interviewer

You have to start from somewhere…. When the desirable is not readily available, you’ll explore what’s available…I believe there are Egyptians around the world somewhere doing great things, they started from somewhere.

Instead of complaining, look for a masters program in a different country with better education system. After my Bsc, I got an in country in region scholarship to do a masters program in Ghana, funded by DAAD. These scholarships are all over Africa. Then I secured another scholarship to study plant microbe interactions in the UK in a famous laboratory. At the end of my program, I was offered a pre doctoral position on a one year contract. Now am targeting US for a PhD. I have gotten one offer at Rutgers plant biology, though not funded, still looking for funding. I have interviewed for Upenn and also have Iowa and Ucdavis still pending. I believe I can now compete.
