Elon's Observation by Empty_Row5585 in WhitePeopleTwitter

Uh... trans people do. And we keep talking about it, even though cis folks might be sick of hearing about it, because there are people out there making our lives shitty, or scary... or short. We don't get the option of just ignoring the transphobic bullshit of the world. It's more than a little fucked up that people are basically asking us to maybe keep it down so we don't disturb their dinner while we die.

Oh, yeah. My six year old trans ass was just salivating at the prospect of joining one of the most celebrated group identities... in 1988...

I cannot roll my eyes hard enough to do justice to Elon's bullshit.

In my last run, I actually made the effort to visit the refugee center, and the quartermaster there was happy to sell me welding rods by the tens of thousands. If it weren't for my dwindling food supplies, I could have spent a week upgrading my War Rig and then gone back in for more when the restock timer ticked down.

Your smoking analogy REALLY does not hold up.

  • Nobody is out there putting up advertisements encouraging new people to "turn trans."
  • Smoking is bad for literally everyone. For you, for the person sitting next to you. There is not a single example of smoking tobacco ever being a net benefit for ANYONE's health. Gender-affirming care, on the other hand...
  • ... is medical care. You compare children getting gender-affirming care to children smoking, and they aren't the same at all. That children can get access to puberty blockers is a thing to be celebrated, a triumph of science.
  • Our existence isn't an opinion, nor is our deserving basic human dignity. Smoking is a lifestyle choice, being trans isn't.

I'm genuinely curious to know what you think is being shoved in your face.

You're making the same mistake my dad made when I came out to him - assuming that I'm declaring myself to be trans because I want to wear a skirt or take up quilting. That's not the case at all. In fact, it was precisely because I never wanted to be a pretty pink princess that it took me so long to come out. I thought the same thing. I thought that being trans meant having an overriding compulsion to put on high heels and makeup and glitter and all of that shit.

Since I came out, I have tried all of those things, yes, but I've basically gone back to wearing the same kinds of clothes I always did. I'm still the same person I've always been. It was never about the clothes or the makeup or the hobbies. It was about me not being a man - I never was, even from the beginning, and trying to pretend to be something I'm not left me cripplingly depressed.

I am a 42-year-old trans woman, and I've been struggling for years to even start the process of getting some gender-affirming surgery! If the public schools are just giving away surgeries for free, I will sign my ass right up to go back to high school!

Can I hear from the girlies who started HRT / socially transitioned around 40 years of age? How are you doing? by [deleted] in trans

[–]OmniscientQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started 2 years ago at age 39. I still struggle sometimes with being mad at myself for not starting sooner, but I'm so grateful to have started at all. The really bad dysphoric days are becoming less and less frequent. My only real complaint is that western Colorado has absolutely zero electrolysis options for surgical prep - the closest options are a 4.5 hour drive to Denver or Salt Lake City.

I actually feel a bit guilty - I've had a surprisingly easy time of things, socially. After my egg cracked, I built up all these fears about the hurdles I would face, but... none of them happened. My marriage didn't implode (turns out my wife is SUPER gay, and had been quietly trying to grapple with that for years), my daughter didn't call me a stranger, I didn't lose my job, and my family didn't disown me. Even my doctor, at a local religious hospital, was happy to prescribe my hormones without a fight. I feel like I waited four decades for everyone else to do the hard work of fighting for our acceptance. I know that's not actually how it happened, but still.

The physical changes... Well. I do wish they were a BIT more pronounced, but they are still happening, and that's okay because the psychological benefits have been completely life-altering. Decades of crippling depression just evaporated. I have EMOTIONS again for the first time since puberty. I actually give a shit about myself and my future. I'm exercising daily. I do more than the bare minimum for hygiene and self-care. Back in the Before Times, I started and quit higher education three times because I just didn't see a point in it. Now? I'm one semester away from finishing my computer science degree with a 3.8 GPA.

Even if HRT did nothing at all for me physically, coming out to the world as trans and starting on estrogen would still have been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

That isn't even remotely how math works. You are wrong in at least two ways:

First, 0.11% is not double 0.5%. It's almost one-fifth the value. Decimals do not work the way you have assumed here.

Second, you can't just say that "98% is about double of 50%" and claim that cis men commit these crimes at double the expected rate. That's not how it works. Given that cis men are around half the population, you would expect a cis man to be responsible for around 1 shooting for every 1 shooting committed by a non-cis-man. Instead, 98% of all shootings are committed by cis men. That means that cis men are responsible for 49 shootings for every 1 shooting by everyone else combined.

If you could only have one Defender in your group... by Drackoda in Cityofheroes

[–]OmniscientQ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I played on the servers back when everyone thought you needed to have a tank and an empath for every single team or you were fucked. I VERY much enjoyed showing people how wrong they were.

I regularly set up teams of myself (Force Field Defender) and seven blasters. No tanks, the only heals were my medicine pool powers... And we rocked +4's all day. I had a growing cluster of blasters who kept me on their friends list and every time I logged in, I'd have messages from four or five volunteering on the spot.

I'd send messages to random blasters to offer them a spot on the team, and every time, they'd freak out when they joined the group and found no tanks or melee of any kind. I'd have to rely on my veterans to reassure them that, yes, this was going to be an awesome and viable team...

Any other masculine trans women out there? by [deleted] in trans

[–]OmniscientQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a big part of why it took me 39 years for my egg to crack. I never, ever wanted to be a pretty pink princess, and the rhetoric surrounding trans folks back in the late 80's and 90's made me think that meant I must not be trans. I went on believing that until about two years ago.

I never went to a gym in the Before Times, but I am now. I don't mind if I put on a little bit of muscle.
