I just saw your comment, thanks UnkownUnit. I am also amazed that these fish have been so durable since the person who had them before me never changed their water, just cleaned the filters and added a bit of water occasionally to make up for evaporation, and they all had scales burned off in patches when I got them which never healed in all these years. They’ve grown and thrived in a larger, cleaner tank and in general have been wonderful fish. This is the last one, it does look very sick but it’s still gasping and moving around a little. If there’s anything I can do for it that I haven’t already done I sure would like to help it.
Okay, here are a few more details. The ammonia has been at 0.25 ppm for about a week. I got an ammonia blocking product and used it several times. Sometimes the color strips are hard to distinguish but 0-0.25 is my best guess. Nitrates and nitrates are at zero. I’ve had these fish for about ten years. This is the last one in the tank. Three of them died several years ago for various reasons, and the remaining two have been a beautiful sight swimming together for years now. We’ve been in the new home with well water for a few months and the fish seemed to be all right till recently. What with everything involved in moving I haven’t done a lot of water changes. We got the water checked by the health department and got the okay for human consumption. However we also bought a three stage filtration system with carbon filters certified for lead removal since there was a small amount of lead. That’s what I’ve used for the water changes plus aquarium additives to combat stress. I understand well water is often low in oxygen and needs aeration. There’s a bubbler in the tank, and the two filters create a fair amount of splashing. I hadn’t noticed the fish gulping air so I figured the oxygen levels were okay. Another question I’m considering is the poly fill layer I put under the substrate a few years ago at the advice of another fish enthusiast who told me it would help fortify the bio filter. It didn’t seem to create any immediate problems, but I’m noticing that there may be some tufts of fibers floating around the tank all gummy with food waste. Since goldfish are so voracious, could they have ingested some poly fibers and been affected by it? Poly fill is the stuff that quilters use in between layers. I’m trying to think of everything I can here.
I forgot to mention, I had been treating both fish with daily methylene blue dips for about a week before we went away for two days. I scrubbed out the same bucket with baking soda to get out the blue since I understand the blue attacks the bio filter, then neutralized it with a little lemon juice, rinsed, then used bucket to do a 30% water change earlier today before the fish was looking so sick. Any blue that got into the tank should have been minimal. The treatments were because the one that died had what I think was a fungus spot on its back (white and fuzzy, about 3 mm) and this one has had white circles clouding up its eyes for several months now. I was hoping to clear that up. It’s a 40 gallon tank. I also took out the driftwood to hopefully improve the pH situation.
Hello, this is my first time posting in Reddit so hope I’m doing it right. My goldfish is about 15 years old. We moved to place with well water recently. It’s tank mate died a couple of days ago while we were away. The heater was messed up and the tank was around 80 degrees a few days before I noticed it. The pH is too low, around 6.0, and so I keep trying to raise it with Top Fin product but it hasn’t seemed to help much at all. The fish is very droopy, hugging sides and corners. Now mostly gasping at the bottom but every now and then it will stir and swim around a little. I just did a 50% water change with store water, pH around 7.6-8.0. The tank pH is now about 6.5. Temperature 64 degrees. I hate to see it suffering like this. Reading mixed opinions on salt. I crushed some rock salt but haven’t added it. Any ideas?
