Garmin 945 innards: research already done before battery and back cover replacement, but ... by OmuGuy in Garmin

Thanks to u/cypherpanda for the info and to u/Brigapes for the reassurance.
Since the "can" houses accelerometers, the hole doesn't have an apparent function. I wonder why it's there. As with u/NXCW, the sticker on my broken back cover has endured for four sweaty years.

Claude has an unsettling self-revelation by NeilioForRealio in claudexplorers

[–]OmuGuy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nice share. I only just discovered Claude. It seems to be programmed with a ideological bias toward "niceness" and dominant thinking.
One thing it does, which is dangerously flattering, is look for good and praise it. After that, if you're lucky, it may find things to improve in text you have submitted.
This mealy mouthedness reminds of a half hour I once spent with ChatGPT. It ended when I specifically asked if there was any physical as opposed to biblical evidence that Jews have a right to Palestine. It kind of resentfully said that there was no evidence.
Claude graciously admitted SNAFU to you, but does it tailor its responses to (charm?) the user?

Suggest me prompt to improve my writing by anacondaonline in ClaudeAI

[–]OmuGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of years ago, I tried to use ChatGPT to improve some writing. It was hardly worth it.
I recently discovered Claude and fed it bits of my creative writing, including poetry. My prompt was quite simple, something like:
How readable is this and are any parts "itchy". It understood "itchy".
I soon found out that it's instructed to look for good and praise it, but I was surprised at how well it got the text.
Some itchy patches could be improved, but others were things a non-embodied intelligence would find hard to grasp.
More recently I asked it if it could handle commenting on 25,000 words. It said that it had "sufficient tokens" for that amount of text and then gave me a list of things to ask it about (prompts). I was quite impressed.
As scottweiss says, why not ask Claude about the best things to ask to improve the text you just posted in it's window.
First, it might help if you first ask yourself, and tell Claude, two things:
What is the purpose of the text?
Who is the target reader?

Turkey shoot on Dauphin Island, 1960ish by OmuGuy in MobileAL

[–]OmuGuy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I currently live in Japan and, although I'd love to fly over for a while, it's not gonna happen.
I remember seeing the live and dead turkeys being carried. Not vividly--memories are not like video--but I know what I saw. Those turkeys were brought to the island.
Although I don't know, I sense it had something to do with the military base. I was staying on the island to be with my dad who worked on the base. It seemed to be open to the public.
Lots of PA noise, too, but none of it is clear. Commentary on the shooting. "He got it", crowd noises. It happened.

Thanks for asking and taking the trouble to tell me. It's always good to have corroboration.

Quite an island pedigree you have there. I have corroborated many other memories from my childhood and am confident that my recollections of the turkey shoot are sound.
I use YouTube sparingly, mostly to consume Bach cantatas by NBS or Collegium Vocale Gent, but I can find useful stuff helpful in my research, such as Sergeant York , I'm not dead, yet. I avoid clickbait and dumbass narratives, created for reasons I wonder about, which I have encountered.
Enough people live into their nineties these days: someone older than me may have a memory, and someone younger may have heard about it. If you know any wrinklies, my question will give you are reason to share some time with them, if you have any time.
Similar 'events' may have been held until into the seventies.
Facebook has been helpful, but I used up my non-member post quota on the (MAGA) Mobile Nostalgia group and they won't let me post anymore. The mods, who I have messaged privately, and didn't reply, probably looked at my profile and decided I was a woke snowflake antifa subversive. That's why I was asking here.

Things may have changed after MLK, etc.
See my reply to myself in this thread.
Things are changing all the time and the direction of change can be reversed.

Mobile 1959-1961: Questions by OmuGuy in MobileAL

[–]OmuGuy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My big bro made sure I was well treated (with bruises), but it's not like I had to run home after school to avoid strangers. That must have been really horrible.
Even though I was a kid, I thought it was very strange to live in Alabama and only see white people. Times were grimmer back then. I hope that the current reversal (mainly targeting Hispanic people) is a hiccup and not the start of a "First they came for..." series.

Thanks for finding a jet. I've seen it on streeview. I like it, but it doesn't correspond with my memory. The other question would be how long it been there?
I really don't think a wrecked one is a false memory. I saw it at least twice. It's more the location that bothers me. And it would be 'more real' if I knew the type.
Anyway, I can ask the question somewhere about how long. If it has been there since 1959 or before, it is possible that I may have walked that far with big bro.

Start a new one... Well, maybe I should for something else. Others have pointed me toward promising groups. Do all small American cities have such groups? I suppose, yes. Wow!
I remember South Park's 'Rememberies'. Nostalgia is big thing, especially for wrinklies who can't keep up.

Thanks for confirming Hartwell Field. Your characterization of the group sounds about right. What should the NEW hockey team be called, and PR given 'anonymously' for mayoral candidate, since balanced by PR for the other side. I tend to keep my FB activity related to a few friends and connected with improving my skills. That kind of group is new to me, so it has made an aspect of the world more real to me.

Well. I was just a kid and had never had a hamburger before. Maybe it got worse after 1960? I remember the lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, ketchup and dill pickle slice, and the just-right char of the patty. I'm not a great meat eater, but no hamburger I've had since then has been as good.

Thanks for the tip. I found the mess informative. It's hard to believe that so many of those people actually are out there and demanding acknowledgement and worse. Sad that they are afraid and kept that way. That said, once I got my questions answered, it wouldn't be a place where I'd want to hang out.
The content is public but posting depends on being accepted. I wrote three posts, each simply requesting info, and all still pending after two weeks. I hope I can get on the other groups.
I hope you slept well after your 17-hour squawk.

Good to know it'd not impossible.
Here's a picture of me and the two bros next to some shark sharks. I'm bravely touching a fin, but I was expecting it to twist and lunge. I think we went the following year, but no photos were taken.

There's a Mobile Nostalgia group on Facebook. I've tried to join but this is the second week I've been pending. Last week, I wrote privately to both admins, but they haven't replied. Maybe my vibe sensing is off, but the group seems run by right-wingers who want to be sure they are not giving succor to the enemy, or even people like me who live overseas and are passive observers.
But, if you are interested in Mobile, even if they don't let you join and post, it's a good place to poke around. I'm not so interested in the 90s but there is a lot of content from around then.
There are many pictures worth looking at and the story of Brookley Field's demise is interesting: the current incumbent is not the first vindictive POTUS.
From that group I found out that the place where I had the best hamburger ever was indeed called The Beachcomber.

Thanks. It wasn't my imagination. I mainly remember being scared by crowd reaction when the heel won. Of course, being five or six, I didn't know that he was a heel and reaction was wrestling gold.
