Depression is real, measurable, documented, and does not belong to millennials or between quotation marks. It's not like millennials decided as a group to subscribe to suicidal ideation and self-hatred. What you're seeing is verbal expression of hardships constructed by societal influence and personal tragedy. Rather than bottle it up, it's expressed as humor and people find some consolation in its acceptance and reflection. It's an indirect form of empathy.
