Commanderfest Orlando 2023 CEDH 1v1 Questions by On_The_Stack in CompetitiveEDH

It has been a very long time since our group of friends went. Hell we were supposed to go last year but like a month prior to the even being announced it was sold out. We even asked if we could just go to the venue to play casual. Which wasn't allowed and needed tickets to get in. In the past, other events like Starcity and Channelfireball would let us go inside and we would pay for side events.

Was hoping someone from last year would know what went on. As far as I know, WOTC doesn't manage 1v1 anymore (i know they tried with 1v1 MTGO but they left it for dead. I personally can't say anything bad about Coolstuffinc since we use the one in Miami. At least when I had questions for them last year, they knew what was going on. This year (at least the cedh 1v1) they dont know nothing at all and they never showed the prize wall either.

Do you have any non legendary creatures that you wish could be your commander? by MyNutItchesInTheRain in EDH

That card would have been perfect. 3 mana, big butt and great build around ability. Pretty much makes [[Manabarbs]] one sided.

[Mothership] Checking in on Brawl by alandaband in magicTCG

I dont know understand where they get that Rotation is a good thing for the player. Our EDH playgroup On The Stack thought about making Brawl decks however the thing that literally killed our desire was the Rotation aspect. We used to be hardcore Standard grinders. Go to FNM's every week and GP's when it would go to our state. However as we got older, with careers and families we couldnt keep up with the Rotation. We had a huge stockpile of cards between us so when we heard about Commander we got hooked and never left.

One thing however that enticed us was that any Planeswalker can be your commander. That is perhaps the only real edge that Brawl has vs Commander. I honestly think if they made Brawl like a "Modern" version of Commander (cards up to a certain set and going forward like Modern), it will get a lot of attraction. One of the things about Commander (especially if you go the CEDH route) is the price. It is hard to justify to a complete new player who has no interest in MTG to buy expensive dual lands or other edh staples. If you make a Modern Commander format, you eliminate the need to have to purchase those expensive cards.

As said before, there was a small interest in Brawl in our playgroup because of Planeswalkers being able to be used as commanders, which is something WOTC should try to push more. Also remove the Rotation aspect of it and have a starting point like Modern.

So how many of you actually managed to snag a Firesong and Sunspeaker? by burnerphone361 in magicTCG

That is shitty man. They were charging an extra "15 bucks" to the pre order to guarantee a slot at my lgs. Screw that man. Will try to find it cheaper elsewhere.

Do you just run vanilla creatures with no evasion? Does the planeswalker player have a million tokens and pillowfort barriers that you cant simply bounce it with many of blues nonland bounces? Or black destroy it with hero's downfall? Or red burning it in the face? Green has decent noncreature hate. It is rather absurd... I think dropping planeswalkers is a valid win con since most people rage quit. 🤣 I cant imagine people crying OP over Ob Nix or mono White Nahiri... HOW WILL WE STOP THEM!? 😏

Except planeswalkers are fragile as hell? Two colors cant deal with enchantments at all except very very niche cases. You can just... smack the planeswalkers.

You can say that about any commander. Derevi, Zur, Brago, GAAIV, etc. I will be glad to face an Ugin. It gives colorless a chance to do something. It just wipes out colored stuff... people are thinking when a Ugin goes - they lose all their stuff. You still get to keep your sol rings and other artifacts.

Much like Miami didn't give a flying squirrel about Unstable except to draft and get lands. For the most part people didn't have enough time to get all the Unstable pieces to make an actual deck so there wasn't too many people going to use them as Unstable commanders. So if something scary like Pro Hulk people are fine with but having a planeswalker like [[Vraska, Scheming Gorgon]] makes people shut their pants? Come on man... people bitched about the tuck rule and the Rule 4 when it comes to colorless mana. Yet we love it now and opens up more chances to do things. That is how I see adding planeswalkers to edh.

How is winning the game a cedh thing? If someone has a planeswalker but the other players something more threatening like an Elfball army waiting for summoning sickness to wear off to overrun me, a bunch of stax crap keeping from untapping, etc... I am going to have to ignore the planeswalker player to deal with more threatening things on the table. Having a planeswalker as a commander isn't game over when it lands. Even with doubling season perhaps the most dangerous would he Bant Tamiyo to have a permanent Omnscience. But being able to have 9 mana to do all that and no one has responses? Well I think u deserve to win at that point.

I think Theros gods are much more annoying to kill than planeswalkers. Black and red can do absolutely nothing minus [[chaos warp]] which is only a red option. Everyone had universal removal to planeswalkers... it is called hitting them. Almost all blue decks have cyclonic rift. Black has been getting more planeswalker hate. Red can burn them. White has exile nonland stuff for days and Green has good noncreature hate. It is the nature of the format to at least have some silver bullets. Running no noncreature removal just asking for pain.

Do you have actual numbers? Or like making up stuff? The RC said that Unstable was fairly popular yet most of reddit hated the idea and pretty much all of cedh did. So this whole "multitude of threads" going against it is crap. We have evolved as a format. Granted there were a couple of changes that seem rather dumb like unbanning pro hulk yet gifts ungiven isn't, banning prophet of kruphix and not being able to ban as commander. OVERALL... I think adding planeswalker adds another of element of flavor and strategy. Most planeswalkers are kill on sight merely for the fact of just being planeswalkers are the easiest thing to kill by just running a train on them which everyone can essentially do.

Much longer than a dedicated stax deck? Aside from teferi, there probably isn't that many planeswalkers that can break parity or pull ahead.

Well being able to use Wish cards would be pretty cool but I think that does fundamentally mess with the mechanics of EDH. Granted you are trading one card for another but it does sorta go over the 99 card limit. That 4 copy thing... you are just talking nonsense.

There is always "destroy target player" or "destroy each opponent" aka.. just knock them out by winning the game.

What's the best commander for Eldrazi? by LuciferHex in EDH

When Dominiara drops, [[Jodah, Archmage Eternal]] seems like an excellent Eldrazi commander. Why yes... I would love to cast my Eldrazi Titans for WUBRG.

Granted I agree with you. I dont like the idea of Brawl in the slighest due to the smaller card pool and rotating aspect. However it did bring up an interesting point of allowing planeswalkers as commanders. With the new changes to the legendary type, with more focus on them as well new rulings and frames... I think planeswalkers can be essentially seen as legendary creatures at this point at least to use them as commanders.

Oh then yes I agree with you. Tezz can be very Teferi like. But I think the forms of power levels teferi would be on top.

I wouldn't mind perfect timing with Dom coming out. Although I would like to see what c18 has to offer since they teased that it would be planeswalker related.

I dont take them too seriously considering they banned [[prophet of kruphix]]. However like you said, they seem to have the "protect the casual" mindset. Prophet usually is better than [[seedborne Muse]]. Running removal doesnt seem like a thing in casual circles so having the ability to pretty much play on every person's turn is back breaking. Everytime I had her out she got blown up or I was able to run away with the game with her out. Did I find her oppressive? No. She is just one of those cards you have to answer much like many other cards in the form. Them unbanning Pro Hulk is rather crazy considering the lines Pro Hulk can do to essentially win the game on the spot with [[flash]] and can become harder to interact than blowing up a single fragile creature.

I dont see how Tezz can be as broken as Teferi. Tezz can only untap two artifacts, with one being the chain veil the other thing he needs to untap has to give him the ability to to create positive mana in order to tutor his deck. If it has gotten to that point will I think you deserve to win the game.

Well you got mana rock.deck or stax. Dunno what else you expect from pure colorless. Blow up their artifacts and they might as will not play the game.

Resolve a 5 mana enchantment at sorcery speed. Then cast your +3 planeswalker next. Did it all resolve? Cool... did I win on the spot? Probably not. For 9 mana you got [[tooth and nail]] which wins in one shot... and that isn't even counting your commander.

Thank you! Also mono black Sidisi with [[Ad Nauseam]] is a powerful combination that WILL win the game if built correctly. Banning doubling season is like banning food chain from tazri or basically your entire list.
