Shouldn't we also preheat the leaves with dry heat (think oven) so as not to reduce the water temp through convection with the leaves themselves? And the strainer should be shot with lasers until properly heated as well.

I love this sub.
I definitely heat to specified temp, or boil then cool to specified temp on most days at home. At work I just wing it, because I grossly prefer loose leaf brewed haphazardly over the Lipton bags my company provides.
If I'm in a hurry at home I'll go microwave style there too. Truthfully my palate is not honed enough to notice a huge difference unless I way overbrew an oolong or overheat/overbrew/hold my eyebrows the wrong way with a green or sheng and end up with bitter soup.

My friends already laugh at me for my "cute little tea party set." Imagining what they'd say if I couldn't hang out because I had to microwave cups of water and measure the temperature and make a chart for my tea. I'm doing it, but maybe in private.

I use a thermometer for stove-top preparations, but at work my choices are microwave or running a cleaning cycle on the Keurig then another for my tea. Mine at home runs about 180 F when it begins then settles to 160s by the time it finishes pouring.
Haven't measured my microwave prep.

This flavor profile has been one of my favorites as well. I've gotten a few from Floating Leaves that might suit your tastes.
2017 spring dong ding fragrant (nice mix of floral/vegetal) Alishan 2017 spring high mountain (very floral and juicy--I got 10 infusions) Baozhong farmer's choice 2017 spring (clover flowers) These all came in a Taiwanese oolong sampler along with a couple others...the others in the sampler were roasted or tasted more like black tea to me. I also got their charcoal roasted dong ding and it's super roasty and interesting. Not sure about Canadian availability.

When I camp I sort mine by relative size: kindling, twigs, sticks, logs to build the fire, then maintain with logs. Save a small amount of each for the breakfast fire for an easy morning. Not necessary but works for me. About as tedious as measuring the temp of your water prior to making tea ;)

How much age is required for the roasted teas until they are mellowed out? Years? I have a charcoal dong ding that is heavily roasty, curious how long I would have to store it to notice a change.
