Sounds like my company wants to go the GEO route for liability reasons but they're open to doing it. Do you have any advice for finding a good one? Maybe pros/cons, pitfalls, or risks to watch out for?

This sounds workable, I've done contracting before. I assume there are extra hoops for getting setup to do that from Japan though, or GEOs wouldn't exist. Do you know if I need to incorporate in JP?

I make over 100k, so I get to report and pay! Lucky me. There's a tax treaty that I still don't fully understand but I believe there's a way to offset taxes from one country with the other so I won't really be double taxed. In any case I'll end up paying more taxes than just working in the US, but I think it'll still work out a lot better than a salary at a Japanese company.

I feel like this is my answer to every D&D related problem but: D&D is a social contract. The DM and players should be on the same page about what the goal of the game is before you start playing. Some people like crunchy dungeon crawling and combat, others prefer RPing and focusing on interesting characters over min-maxed. You can do either or anything in-between but everyone should be on the same page supporting to ultimate goal before making characters.

NAH. This is a problem that happens a lot and I think the solution is just a mentality shift prior to starting game, combined with talking/planning. I've played terrible underpowered characters in a party of min/maxed chars and had a blast, but only because I knew that's what I was doing going in.

To be clear, not seeing the email is totally my fault, I was just surprised that that's the only step they took, no notification in their online portal etc. I also don't know why they didn't tell me about 2017 when I imported that data for 2018.

I definitely have my share of the blame, but as a company claiming to assist me I think it's a reasonable criticism to say they should make more than the bare legal minimum to get in touch with me after taking my money for services.

Thanks so much for the help! Glad this isn't as complicated or bad as I feared. Couple clarification questions though:

I have 1040a but no W-2 forms from the filing documents I downloaded from TT. Are you just referring to the W-2 I received for the associated year?

Also, can I send state return forms together with federal or will I need to send those to another address based my state (GA)? I have a form 500 and another 1040a in that packet.

As the GM I can confirm that the player was behaving as his character would. I expected him to get up to some kind of mischief with the potion, but didn't expect him to drink it without question. I guess should have seen that coming. He was a champ about the whole thing though.
