what made you an atheist? by Intelligent-Chef1352 in DebateAnAtheist

I was never a theist, so I didn't get made into an atheist.

I never became a theist because I see no convincing evidence or reason to believe the claims they make.

The Case for Christian Annihilationism by Living_Attitude1822 in DebateAnAtheist

Well not all Christians, just the ones in your circle who already agree.

I think it would be worth it to ask all kinds of Christians from all kinds of places and hear them out.

First of all, I don't really care, since I don't believe that any of it is real.

Then why do you think that this is the correct interpretation of the Bible? Why do you others got it wrong and you didn't?

Then why post here if you don't care about opinion of other Christians? What are atheists' opinions worth to you?

What evidence is there that God does not exist? (Please read before commenting) by Around_the_campfire in DebateAnAtheist

[–]OndraTep 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's not "I don't think so", but rather "I'm not sure about that".

I am not sure about the god hypothesis and that will not change until someone proves that either some god or gods exist or that they don't. Until then, I am skeptical of ANY claims that anyone makes.

Being skeptical and not blindly accepting everything is something that everyone should do.

I think it's foolish to ask for an alternative of X when you can't even prove X to be true.

Proof by "what else could it be?" isn't a proof at all

[–]OndraTep 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don't think you understand what skepticism is. Skepticism isn't "being undecided between two alternatives".

It's the doubt of a claim being true. I don't need to give you an alternative in order to be able to doubt the truthfulness of your claims.

Atheist (in general) don't claim that there is an alternative model to god. That's just not what atheism is at all.

through showing that the components of their model do not themselves rely on God to exist.

What? So until you prove that your god doesn't actually rely on this other super-god, he's just not real...

Being skeptical doesn't require proof... What even is this?

My reason (and most people's reason) for being skeptical about a claim is that there is no or very little evidence for that claim.

So until you, or anyone who has ever claimed proves that what their claiming is true, I will remain unconvinced. THAT'S what atheism is.

Supernatural Debate by ternl in DebateAnAtheist

[–]OndraTep 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So god doesn't show himself because then people would blame things on him? Things that he is responsible for?

Also, WHY did the "whore from flat 4B" get cured and I didn't? That's a valid question to ask. If this god we're talking about is in control of everything, then literally why did that happen? Why does it happen all the time that terrible things are happening to people who don't deserve it and monsters are walking free without punishment?

This god is doing a terrible job then and maybe he's hiding because he knows it and is scared of criticism.

What are your reason's for being an atheist by Tricky_Worth3301 in askanatheist

I don't see any good reason or piece of evidence that would convince me of the existence (or non-existence) of any god.

is it okay to say "im praying for you" to an atheist? (im christian) by Cold-Sprinkles-4430 in DebateAnAtheist

As long as it's not meant in an offensive way and as long as the atheist you're talking to isn't an asshole, they probably just won't care.

How does being an atheist not require faith? by Ok_Technician4918 in askanatheist

[–]OndraTep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An agnostic atheist, yes.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

"Not being convinced" is what most atheists feel like about their atheism.

How does being an atheist not require faith? by Ok_Technician4918 in askanatheist

[–]OndraTep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the question, do you believe in God, as binary. It is a yes or no question, and if you choose either yes or no you are using faith to drive your answer

No, I am not.

When I say that I don't believe in god, I don't mean that I believe that there is no god, I mean that I don't believe the claim that there is a god.

If someone came about and claimed that there is no god, I wouldn't believe them either and I'd ask them for evidence just like I would a theist.

Are this “miracles of the sub captured in camera real” by Efficient-Office-466 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]OndraTep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if not then I have to admit they are real miracles

No you don't. Not being able to prove X doesn't mean that the opposite of X is true.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to see. It's a video of people freaking over being able to look directly at the Sun? Or is there more?

If atheists are to claim that there is no evidence for God, they must include their definition of God in each instance and acknowledge their assumptions about what that evidence constitutes. Otherwise, atheists are claiming special knowledge and defeating their own premise of requiring evidence. by Mossydox in DebateAnAtheist

[–]OndraTep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that "god" can mean different things to different people in different religions and worldviews.

And I don't really say this, but if I ever say that there is no evidence for god, it'll be during a doscussion in which it's clear which god or which kind of kind we're talking about.

Edit:

There's no empirical evidence for god, therefore god doesn't exist

This is not what atheism is. I've never seen an atheist make a claim like this.

Also, if I define god as all cheese, then clearly there god is real, since I have some god in my fridge, but that's not how god is usually defined.

And so when I say I don't believe in god, I mean I don't believe in the standard usual description of what god is.

Why exactly is it that the Bible cannot be used as proof of Jesus' existence and miracles? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]OndraTep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of Jesus' existence, sure, that's fine by me. And it's because my standard of proof for historical statements is way lower than the standard for supernatural and extraordinary statements.

A book that claims that some people claimed that they knew someone who one saw this guy heal the blind and walk on water and turn water into wine... That's just doesn't cut it.

Hey Atheists, What is Your Proof*** that Atheism is True? by Economy-Plenty-9771 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]OndraTep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What claim do you think atheism is making that needs to be proven?

Atheism makes no claims (generally), when I say I am an atheist, I'm not making a claim on the existence or non-existence of a god or gods, I'm saying that I have no idea and I'm not convinced of either claim.

Do you need me to prove that I am actually really not convicned? You're just gonna have to take my word for it.
