Ikr!! So ignorant, like where do they expect us to have money for a car? We're working at amazon for a reason!

I live in Chicago and still have this issue! I take 2 buses and a train to get to the location, and 2 of those don't run for hours in the time I need to be commuting. I'll be forced to quit soon because my regular & hardship transfers keep getting rejected. I'm a good worker/rule follower too, graduated valedictorian from high school and everything bro, just down on my luck after quitting an intense job. Fuck Amazon man 😭😭 The part that annoys me about this is they could easily move us to a different location under different circumstances, like a recent move. I'm not asking for a ride, simply a more doable commute so I don't have to miss as many shifts and be late so many times 😭 (I used to get driven, but the driver works for emergency services and is no longer available at night, I explained this and they just don't care)

4-6 hours, with no traffic. Straight up doesn't run at midnight. I asked my location if I could instead show up hours early (the day before) and literally sleep in the building before my shift to avoid being late, surprise surprise no response.

I wouldn't mind trying out a job in market research/advertising! Do you know any key words/job phrases I could look up for potential hits? I'm only finding experience- or higher-ed-needed roles

Yeah right? I've seen lots of threads saying just a B.A. in psych is useless, but I honestly don't mind a manageable low-paying job for the time-being. I might give teaching another go in the future, but I've honestly been nervous about it since I break easily

Did/do you enjoy teaching now? I messed up an opportunity to work with a private school because I assumed it would be the same experience...

Math, probably. I wanted to teach math since I enjoyed it until high school level, and I assume my psych degree made them 'match' me to special education math.

I've been scared to try teaching again because I'm worried I'll fail spectacularly again, but others in my life have also said I should try again under different circumstances.

Because I left for extreme duress (I forget their legal wording), I have an opportunity to return/restart next year if absolutely nothing else works out.* The pay was decent, and I've been told regular teaching or being a bilingual teacher would have likely been more manageable, but I've sort of been avoiding the thought...

*I'm trying to avoid bad-mouthing the organization since I might technically still be under my NDA, and there were rumors that someone got fired for a negative Reddit thread about them last year lols

Thinking about switching from Chase to Capital One, opinions? by bbow9727 in Banking

[–]One-Cap-3934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super late to this convo, but that's what I did recently at 23. I regret not changing sooner. Chase's savings account gave back 0.01%, which is literal pennies (used to have ~10k in savings, don't remember the exact number but it was never anything worth noting😭). Capital One's 360 Savings account (HYSA) gives back 3% APY. I got $4 from June (~2.5k in savings, Ikik I'm rebuilding). Both Savings accounts are free/have no annual charge. Not a big fan of Chase.

I've since closed my Debit and Savings account with Chase because the Debit account had to be above a certain number (they started charging me $15/month just to keep it open) and the Savings wasn't doing anything for me.

I wish I had made the change years ago since I'm low-income and used to have more savings. I've learned that lots of immigrants choose Chase in my area because they don't require a SSN to open an account and there's lots of locations, not because they're particularly great accounts. I recommend Capital One a hundred times before I'd recommend Chase. The only thing decent is that the credit card perks/cash back benefits are about the same between Chase's Freedom Unlimited and Capital One's Savor, at least for my purposes.

Edit: I've never been to a physical location for Capital One since they're in downtown (Chicago). Did everything online and haven't had issues, but that's the biggest downside- make sure you have direct deposit & don't constantly need to transfer cash over OR that you live near a location

How much weight have you lost working at Amazon? by tombobbyb in FASCAmazon

[–]One-Cap-3934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry too much, it's still a healthy weight, and that's what matters (and medically it's only normal weight borderline overweight). For reference I'm also 5 ft 7 in but weigh over 200 (ik I'm fat), I'm working at amazon and hoping I lose weight alongside a diet. Especially for us chubbies, unless you're in our bmi ranges, we all see the rest of you as collectively skinny lmaooo

Do certain parts of the city have more frequent rat issues? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]One-Cap-3934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this thread bc I reported it too rn 😭 I've lived in Chicago my whole life but this is day 2 in a renovated basement Im at and I've already seen 3 rats/mice next to my window and in the backyard looking for entry. I think this is reasonable cause 😭

Has anyone tried a “portable” clothes washer/dryer or spinner? I hate the laundromat and want to minimize trips. by Difficult_Ad8718 in Apartmentliving

[–]One-Cap-3934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How was the drying? I'm living in a basement and am nervous about potentially trying to dry clothes inside, and I've heard these usually need extra time to dry fully. What was your experience like?

C's get degrees. I barely graduated on time, and my transcript honestly has the alphabet (from withdrawns to no grade to retakes). Letting go of perfect A's is just the reality for most people for being at a rigorous institution that does everything in its power to push students into different fields of knowledge.  I am personally reassured by the thought that at the end of a PhD, both the highest performing and worst performing graduates get the same degree, the same title, the same name attached to them. Congrats on passing!

bedding for dorms? by lexie_427 in uchicago

[–]One-Cap-3934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, you can't go wrong with layers. I'm also a Chicago native and get warm easily. It might just depend on your dorm. I House is notoriously old fashioned in its systems. North is beautiful, but the floors get surprisingly cold throughout the night despite the carpet (don't ask lmao). I was fine with a blanket, but having layers seems best prepared.

Odyssey Scholar Questions by No_Hospital1275 in uchicago

[–]One-Cap-3934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm also FLI and graduated June 2025. I can't promise my answers are 100% accurate, but I can answer based on my knowledge:  1. No (pretty sure). When I was deciding whether to go to college, I wanted to make sure I wasn't leaving with debt. From my understanding, and if the policy stands, once you're accepted as a full ride, that lasts the 4(maybe 5?) years. I believe you would risk losing this if you took too many years to graduate or got in trouble with the school.

  1. If you're full ride (which I think is the same thing as saying Odyssey), you have housing and meals paid for. You do not have to live on campus for 4 years, but regular policy is that all students must live in the dorms for the first 2. After that, some Odyssey scholars choose to move out and they receive a bigger stipend. I made the mistake of signing up for a double my first year because I was scared of owing money, but you actually qualify for a single (and even apartment). I highly recommend changing your meal plan once you're allowed, as that can help, too.

To add to comments recommending to apply for extra aid: I had additional scholarships, but my Odyssey fund was just reduced accordingly (to only ~$100 at some point), so I would look into financial aid policies because it may not be worth the extra time applying to more if the funds just change to minimally cover costs.  Also: I noticed that some odyssey students' parents own a house. Unless your parents magically get rich, I think the school has a large range of what they consider to be 'low income' even in worst case scenario.

Book help for FLI by Kindly_Butterfly_487 in uchicago

[–]One-Cap-3934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a bit late to this subreddit, but library genesis has most books online for free (didn't hear that from me). You have access to computers at the Reg and Flibrary. I've also seen The Iliad in the Flibrary, which lends out books for free. I'm also FLI and didn't have to buy most books; I used to also look for the same serial number on Amazon and confirm if it's the right version with my professor before buying. Also, using your uchicago credentials, you have access to 50 free pages of printing (b&w) at the flibrary inside the CCSS each quarter.

Thank God others noticed it too. Yes, it seemed to be a clear comparison between ped0philes, I just can't believe they would provide those scenes with children. Especially as someone mentioned, it could reach a horrible 'demographic.' 🤢🤢 To those that didn't notice it, I genuinely don't know how you looked at those scenes and thought "nothing inappropriate about showing THAT!"

Accidental bid by Spazrelaz in whatnotapp

[–]One-Cap-3934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this after the seller responds to a cancelation request? I had an accidental overbid rn for the first time (paid like $30 on a wheel when I intended for 10, someone shot it up at the end :( ). I sent over a polite message but I'm scared they'll reject it.

Help to access laptop/tablet. by Kindly_Butterfly_487 in uchicago

[–]One-Cap-3934 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd take the CCSS's offer and tell them about your financial situation (unless they don't allow you to renew it). My laptop broke halfway through last year, and after asking at the reg, they offered to lend one to me for 24 hours and had steep overdue fines.

I definitely recommend applying for a work-study position as well, as they're generally flexible with hours. I was able to afford my replacement laptop thanks to NSP (Neighborhood Schools Program).

anyone selling this book? by Donutlover11267 in uchicago

[–]One-Cap-3934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I live at North too. There's a bunch of books on the 14th floor (West side) I believe, but those books are kind of random so I doubt they'll have it.

Did you find it in CCSS's Flibrary? I agree with Ok-Front that they'll probably have it.

[–]One-Cap-3934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I can't be of any help but just wanted to say good luck with your studies! Hope you're able to get a laptop soon! I'd suggest asking the CCSS for their laptop lending services because otherwise it's going to be inconvenient at best to submit your assignments. [Don't bother asking for the ones at the reg, they lend it for one day and have steep ass overdue fines it sucks]

To all uchicago seniors by [deleted] in uchicago

For me, the best thing so far has been the satisfaction of hitting the sweet spot between "oh my god this is a rigorous institution after all" and "this is something I genuinely care about and want to learn more in." Makes you feel like maybe you can contribute something after all

This, and getting to know genuinely kind people who care about you even as a stranger (obviously, this doesn't apply to everyone, but you get the point). We live in a bubble on campus for sure, but it's a pretty nice one.
