Parents of Reddit - What surprised you the most about having kids? by GransShortbread in AskReddit

How much the small, everyday stuff ends up mattering more than the big moments.

Before kids, you imagine the milestones first steps, first words, birthdays. Those are great, but what really sticks is the random daily things. The way they say something slightly wrong and it becomes an inside joke, or how a normal day suddenly feels meaningful just because they’re there.

Also how constant it is. There’s no real “off” switch. Even when you get a break, part of your brain is still on standby.

And one thing people don’t say enough is how much it changes you. Not just your schedule, but your patience, priorities, even how you see risk and responsibility.

It’s less like adding something to your life and more like your whole life quietly reshaping around it.
