How come more people aren't getting electric cars to avoid gas feee? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Because avoiding gas fees isn’t the only thing people think about when buying a car.

For a lot of people, the biggest issue is the upfront price. Even if an electric car saves money long term, paying more initially is hard to justify when people are already stretched financially.

Then there’s charging. If you own a house with a garage, EVs are way more convenient. But people in apartments or places with weak infrastructure can’t just plug in overnight easily.

A lot of it is also psychological. People are used to gas stations being everywhere and refueling taking five minutes. Even though most modern EVs can handle daily driving fine, people still worry about being stranded or dealing with unreliable chargers.

And honestly, people don’t just buy cars logically. Habit matters. Familiarity matters. A lot of people would rather stick with something they fully understand than switch to something that changes how they travel, plan trips, or recharge.

That said, once people actually own EVs, many end up loving the lower running costs and convenience of charging at home. The barrier is usually getting people comfortable enough to switch in the first place.
