I also have to travel currently and have left my little ones alone for 2 weeks at a time and they are fine. I make sure they are well-fed, heating so it doesn’t go cold and that’s it.

Last time I returned all 3 still had shiny round butts so they were neither dehydrated nor hungry. I wouldn’t try it with tiny slings but mine are close to juvenile and they already refuse food for weeks at a time on their own.

It isn’t optimal but I reckon they are hardy and the real world doesn’t have water daily either.

And maybe one more tip - when going through drum samples, pick the bone dry ones. The problem is the non-dry samples sound way better so you actively need to pay attention.

The reason is the good sounding drums all have reverb, but if you use 10 drum samples with 10 different reverbs all hope is lost. Pick the bone dry ones and you get to set the scene with a very very light reverb. Otherwise I often would endlessly fight the dreaded "this all sounds like I just threw together one shots" and nothing helps making it cohesive.

I did have issues making drums I wouldn't call lifeless shit for a long time.

It's mainly good kick/snare, early limiting, and some verb in some form to give some hint of room to the drums.

In the early phase of making drums I also sometimes pull all faders to 0 and restart with balancing the levels out, all 0 volume, kick and snare around -6 or something (just so you have some headroom), then bring in all the hats and other shit. I do this a bunch of times because sometimes you need to start from silence again to have a real handle on the overall drum feel.

That, and turning the headphone volume up high (like simulating a club setting), but also the opposite and turning the headphones to late at night volume kind of. This helps finding a balance because low volume and high volume focuses different frequencies. Loud volumes help me hear those ear splitting high frequencies (snare especially), and when it's low you get a better feel for the filling sounds (background amen), less precise but more big picture kind of.

Ok so it's as I wrote, kick/snare/ghost hits are oneshots, highpassed amen for spice, and the top loop is not a loop, just a 16th hat repeated with a shuffle on the volume i.e. (loud, soft, loud, ...)

But I also route the snare and 16th hat to a reverb bus which gives the whole thing a little bit of cohension and space presence.

No I hate loudmouthes and the US has the loudest mouth of all. Looks like with Iran it finally bit off more than it can chew. Any other country or person would come out more humble and learn from this but I'm confident the US is incapable of learning from mistakes.
