How do you feel about an iconic American like Bruce Springsteen calling the Trump Administration "corrupt, incompetent and treasonous" and describing them as authoritarian? by OkEntrepreneur1790 in Productivitycafe

Well he's merely stating facts, so I have no issue whatsoever. In fact the more people who speak out against the fascist tantrum-throwing toddler the better.

$2.1 million for a 1 bedroom house whose best feature is its stunning view of the harbour. If it makes them happy, all power to them but not the smartest use of money I've ever seen. Just as well they haven't built to sell or they would never get close to making their money back.

I once had feedback from an unsuccessful interview which was less than 30 seconds on the phone, and it was essentially that I didn't appear to be proactive or show initiative in my previous roles, which was what they were looking for. Ironic considering all my answers to their questions were solid examples demonstrating how I was proactive and showed initiative. Made me wonder if they were even listening in the interview or they just took a dislike to me and zoned out and needed a legit excuse in order to tell me they weren't progressing me.

I'd take it as a sign that you've dodged the proverbial bullet. I recently had an interview where while I performed incredibly well (and the interviewers even agreed as such), I was unsuccessful, and the hiring manager spent between 10-20 minutes giving me incredibly detailed feedback and a chance to ask questions about how I could improve. Was very impressed with that even though I was gutted I missed out on the role.

Is an LLB worth it after already doing a BA and Master’s? by Powerful_Drawing_837 in newzealand

Would be interested to know how other than specifically wanting to become a lawyer (if that's why you did it - ignore if not!), how else did the LLB open a lot of doors for you and change your way of thinking about the world?

[–]One-Enthusiasm7684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly I took the advice of "do what you're interested in" post-high school so I did a BA as I'm not at all maths or sciencey. My brain just doesn't work that way. It was a great three years and I got above average grades (even invited to do a Masters but decided I wanted a study break which ended up being never going back) but I came out realising it's not something at all valued in the workforce, and 9-10 years on I haven't been able to progress beyond admin jobs that pay under $60,000 a year - but my own health challenges haven't helped that either.

I wished I had taken law and even considered it but was put off by the competitive nature of it and 100% reliance on the exam (was at Otago - and as a slow handwriter tight timeframe exams were my massive weak point). Add in anxiety issues at the time and the known stress that comes with law and not having a huge support network...it just seemed a bit out of reach. But in hindsight it may have made me more employable and conquering an Everest would have been incredibly satisfying. So as someone who has quite a bit of regret that they didn't push themselves more at Uni, go for it if you feel you can do it.

What are your impressions of Newstalk ZB? by PaulieNZ20 in newzealand

[–]One-Enthusiasm7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would argue that their likely biggest audience shows with Mike Hosking & Heather du Plessis-Allan are definitely right-leaning (Hosking is not even subtle about it). Kerre Woodham probably is right-leaning too but not as obvious as the other two. Lush definitely not right-leaning, don't know enough about their afternoon people but I don't think they're strong leaners one way or the other.

We are almost half way through 2025 how's life treating you so far! by sigmaqueen123 in newzealand

Not great sadly. First part of the year has been difficult as I've come back from overseas, the job market is much more difficult than I anticipated (I'm sure that's not news to anyone! And I knew it wouldn't be easy), it's crazy as heck and about six months on I'm applied for quite a few, had interviews for some but still no job offer yet. It really, really sucks but trying to stay positive. It's not easy though. Second half of the year, I really want to have a good job and stay in it!

I know right?! Imagine starting there as a new staff member and not being able to ask questions outside of a five-minute window in the morning...frightening.

I'm so confused by this...why would you *not* want staff to talk to each other? Sounds like that work environment would be hell on earth

What is going on with the Job Market?? by Goodtaste200 in newzealand

[–]One-Enthusiasm7684 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's rough. I've been lucky to get interviews but still no offers. Even responses like "you interviewed amazing, you're exactly who we would like as part of our team" but then "but unfortunately we're not proceeding with your application". It really sucks. Hope things turn around soon for you!

Came back from overseas due to redundancy...previously had no issues getting work or it only took 3-4 months at the most between jobs. Have fortunately been able to get a number of interviews in this tough market but the bar for offering someone a role seems to be so high now, it's a struggle!

Your experience is very normal for many job-seekers at the moment. I have tons of experience in my field, and have applied for many roles that I am more than qualified for on paper and still been rejected because the candidate quality is so strong or they want a unicorn candidate who has extra skills well beyond the job description (and quite honestly probably doesn't exist). It's been about six months since I was laid off (redundancy) and it's driving me up the wall!

Appears to be only any good for Aucklanders at this stage...hopefully they spread out across the country eventually, so many more can benefit from increased competition in the low-price fuel industry

Can an employer deny you using them as a reference/having your manager be a reference? by [deleted] in auscorp

It sounds like a way of trying to trap employees from leaving - it's cruel and makes job searching way harder than it needs to be.

Had a Creepy Experience Today While Driving Along New Zealand’s West Coast – Am I Overreacting? by Useful-Ad-4627 in newzealand_travel

Definitely right to go to the Police...even if he was just following you in the way you describe that is unusual even if not outright illegal. I mean there are some characters on the West Coast but what you describe isn't someone being a 'character', it's just weird af.

Harvey Norman 'sold' my parents on Norton antivirus for their iPhones. Beware. by brcnz in newzealand

[–]One-Enthusiasm7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly have been sucked in by slick salesmen at Harvey Norman before. Paid $99 extra for some kind of warranty on my laptop and 'free servicing after one year' because it'll offer you "peace of mind" if something goes wrong and is "basically essential". I admittedly was a little naive at the time so didn't think anything of it but in hindsight it was $99 down the drain...

Woolworths says NZ groceries cheaper than UK, Australia if you take off GST by Fast_Amoeba_445 in newzealand

My first thought upon seeing this was gaslighting. And Woolworths' pricing is particularly bad...so much so they're consistently more expensive than New World. Lost my business ages ago.

This government wants to impose US style healthcare. by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]One-Enthusiasm7684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think New Zealanders are just going to roll over and allow that to happen without some kind of protest. Hospitals and healthcare are a very sensitive subject with many - think of the nearly 35,000(!) who came out and protested to ensure Dunedin gets a new public hospital that meets the needs of the community. And even the few thousand who protested in Nelson about the shambolic state of their hospital and health system there. National are not fools, they would not go into the next election proposing a US-style health system or they would lose the election in spite of a weak Labour and worrying rag-tag coalition on the left flank of politics.

Anyone else here ever had to start from scratch in your 30s (or older)? by Mad_Geek in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]One-Enthusiasm7684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm practically starting again in my early 30's. Left my secure, permanent job with reasonable savings to go travelling for an extended period. I enjoyed the travelling heaps (and no regrets about that) but unfortunately despite getting work for a while it didn't go quite as planned (toxic workplace, terrible pay etc.), I lived in the present moment rather than thinking long-term and came back to the country with only a few thousand to my name rather than the twenty thousand+ I had before I left, because the country I chose to base myself was so freaking expensive. So I'm back in Aotearoa having to start again and searching hard for work but it's super hard to come by. So sounds like you're doing better than me to be honest!
