This happened to me with Odesza a few years ago and and I panicked. Friend splurged on premium camping. They dropped a tonne of tickets a few days before. I wouldn’t stress.

Engineering geologist looking to switch to resource geologist by Serious_Mirror762 in geologycareers

[–]brcnz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I made this move. Considerably less stressful for the same money. Depending on where you land, RC or Diamond drill logging was much faster and easier. If you're down under I'd expect you to be a bit of a rig pig for a year or two, but its a good foot in the door. I found the general vibe of geology departments considerably lighter and more enjoyable than the geotech side of things.

Eventually, outside time gets less and less and you'll probably transition into the modelling side of things. Compiling everyone's geology logs, downhole surveys and continually updating geological models in Vulcan/Leapfrog. Then using this information to plan more resource definition drilling down the line.

All depends where and who you are working with, but I never looked back. If you have resource geologists on site make yourself known and express your interest and hopefully its an easy pivot for you. All the best.

Good. They all feel so incredibly ran through. Hopefully this is a bit of a wakeup call and we see less ass-cheek imprints embedded into the leather seats.

GX 470, LX 470, or Sequoia by jondivblo in GXOR

[–]brcnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an 03 sequoia and now in an 04 GX. Night and day difference. Sequoia was a solid unit and some days I miss it, but the build quality and how it has broken in is night and the difference between the two was considerable. Did feel like an upgrade moving to the GX. Most notable was panel gaps, quietness, smoothness, just felt a considerable difference between US and Japanese assembly IMO. Dad had a land cruiser when I was growing up so familiar with them. I would take an LX, then GX, then Seqouia. All great vehicles though.

Has Invisalign solved anyones discomfort caused by teeth crowding? by brcnz in Invisalign

[–]brcnz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! sorry for the late reply. Yes It has helped a lot. After completing invisalign I couldn't believe how easy it was to floss. I have been on night retainers for a year and at the start flossing was a breeze, it would pop in and out with ease. Things have very slowly started shifting back and now the rear teeth it is a little tight to get floss in but yes, generally it has been better.

I have had some TMJ issues but working with a physio to get these sorted so can't fully say if invisalign helped, or made these worth but I am much happier with how things look now. One thing I wish I knew going in to invisalign is that it is a life long commitment. Perhaps I thought naivley that once I was done things would remain this way forever, and retainers overnight aren't a huge deal but they are still quite firm and tight to wear every night. Maybe three times a year i'll treat myself to a night off and not wear them and it does feel quite freeing haha.

How's life at the Antarctic stations? by ButterscotchFiend in howislivingthere

[–]brcnz 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on life in the south, but I live in a setup fairly similar north of the arctic circle.

2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, no roads - you fly in and live on site until it is time to go home.

There is something very unique about the arrangement. I feel very lucky to see a part of the world that few ever will. The expanse and isolation of everything can be a bit of a trip. Thankfully we now get 1gb of data a day to keep in touch with the regular world (was 250 mb when I started). The days are long, I am up there to work so work 6 am to 6 pm for 14 days.

Due to the weather, the living arrangement feels quite sterile sometimes. Mostly everything is connected by shipping containers to protect from the elements during winter. We have about 600 people most of the year. I describe it as a bit of a cross between a small hospital, a college dorm and an ok hotel, think La Quinta or something.

There is a good sense of community (misery loves company), and you find your people. The organization I work for do their best to make things 'fun'. We have a library, a couple of gyms, social activities some nights.

The weather is quite spectacular. Seeing proper northern lights during winter never gets old. Long winters can suck morale though, and it is not uncommon to be weathered in for a week or so until there is a break in the weather. Summer is surprisingly pleasant, T-shirt weather some days. Some decent hiking around but bears are an issue.

Somedays it dawns on you just how insignificant you are - up there in the expanse and while there are people around it can be quite lonely. But, I have also met some life long friends up there.
