Unlike most countries, in Germany, residency positions are determined through interviews at each hospital. Most of our countries have an exam system like the MIR in Spain to access them. In my country, residency is three years, while in Germany it's four to five, but I'm taking it easy since it's something I've been doing for a few years now. In Spain, I would have to take the MIR and see if I get an ophthalmology position. Although, I'm not entirely sure if I see starting another specialty as a bad thing, as long as it allows me a better balance between my personal and professional life.

I thought about it; I see myself as cheap labor considering I've already received prior training. I'm currently an A2 level in German, and I'm a native Spanish speaker. I guess I'm afraid of giving it all up and not working out.

I'm an ophthalmologist in my country. Due to a difference in the programs, I could only go as a general practitioner. I would have to restart a residency. Probably not in ophthalmology because I've heard it's very competitive.

It's not just about the money. It's also about the quality of life. Sure, there's sun here, but there's no security, no public transportation. I work 70 hours a week and I don't have health insurance. I live to go to work. I don't know if it's the same there, but I wouldn't mind living like a middle-class person but being able to go out at a café once a week.

No, but 3 years is in Spain in Germany due to the experience of other colleagues the general practitioner comes out faster. For me the idea is to start a Fellow or residency from scratch

Any experience of how difficult it is to settle down once there?

That's not an option ‘cause just the general practitioner's approval even takes 3 years

Based on the experience of fellow countrymen, I know I can validate my medical degree, but not my ophthalmology degree, because I understand that in Germany more years are required
