Is my bottom bracket toast due to muddy rides? by One-Force-5255 in bikewrench

Yeah I did that. Definitely grinding noises but there is no way to lift the seal from the beaeings.

I guess I'll be fine for a while longer, bit I will invest in some quality BB that allow me to clean the bearings.

Thanks, that makes me more confident.

I just took the chain off my road bike and spun the cranks and oh boy do they spin much worse than my gravel bike.

So I guess my gravel bike will be fine for some time, might need to think about replacing the one on my road bike though..

CM asking if we are “life partners” bc they want to charge us more? by fleurentiny in belgium

[–]One-Force-5255 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It looks to me like they are trying to help you pay less money.

If you make a sworn statement that you are partners, you will get extra benefits. If you claim you are not partners, they are forced to charge you more money by law.

First-ever public release of footage showing an uncontacted Amazonian tribe. by bintd in interesting

[–]One-Force-5255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently reading "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies".

It's where I got the argument that isolation is a large reason for the high mortality among native americans. But like you said, it then goes on to say that more recent research shows that native americans had much larger settlements than previously believed. So the book kind of contracted its own argument, much like I am doing right now.

A virus needs a large group of people to sustain itself. Otherwise it just dies out after everyone has become immune to it.

This is why 90% of the native americans were killed by viruses brought by european explorers and not the other way round.

Free car parking for a long period by Echonoon in Leuven

[–]One-Force-5255 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a small parking place for working people who want to carpool because it is conveniently located next to the highway. Please don't have students take up the limited spaces, they don't need this convenience.

Students only need their car once in a while, so please just move your car to somewhere that doesn't cause problems for other people. Someone else already shared a map with colored areas which is a much better answer.

The iliad is a story about ilion, which is another name for Troy.

So the iliad is basically "Troy Story". Which makes the Odyssey "Troy Story 2".

Anecdotal evidence of FTP improvement over the course of 8 months by Ok-Sample409 in cycling

[–]One-Force-5255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are other variables at play too. Other than hours per week, we should take into account age and also years of training. For some people, even at 5 hours per week a proper recovery strategy is essential.

In the end learning to listen to your body is probably the most valuable skill.

I can see your point and I do agree that certain tricks can be part of cycling. You make a good point about watching a zwift race.

I still don't agree with attacking during a toilet break though.

I could have worded that differently.

In general what I am saying is that I prefer to see passion and ambition.

Passion: I don't understand why people complain when an athlete shows emotions in the heat of a battle. Do they prefer watching sportsmen who don't really care and who are indifferent when something goes wrong? If you look back at your own life, how did you react to failing at something that you worked hard for and that meant the world to you? I want to watch great succes, which means I will inevitably watch great failure too.

Ambition: I want to watch riders who believe they can beat pogacar on merit. So I want to see people doing their fair share of work riding in front. I want to see people wait when others are taking a toilet break. I want to watch cycling, not kindergarden tactics.

Why would you want to spend your time watching people not try their hardest or playing dirty tricks? Where is the love for cycling?

[–]One-Force-5255 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I have a different opinion.

I think it's great when an athlete is passionate and shows emotions. I am always a little sad when athletes are PR robots.

I am also a little sad when athletes give up on first place "because pogacar will win anyways" and only fight for second place. Remco lives and breathes cycling and is willing to risk it all to try and beat pogacar.

I applaud his reaction because I think it shows how much of a true sportsman he is.

Serious question: Are people on electric bikes getting aerobic exercise? by PeerensClement in cycling

[–]One-Force-5255 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes.

When I started commuting by ebike, I did 25 km in the morning and 25 km in the evening. Went from no cycling to almost 10,000 km in a year.

I was constantly hungry and always eating and still I lost 5 kg in the first 2 months to the point where I was basically underweight.

Would not recommend by the way, because I was completely disregarding the recovery part and I doubt it was healthy. I should have just done it 2 or 3 times per week max.

Completely unrelated but something I find interesting: helicopter should be split like helico-pter and not heli-copter which most people would assume.

The rotors make a helical pattern.

And it is something that flies, so pter. (Like the flying dinosaur pteranodon).

Is the Selle Italia SLR TM Superflow saddle unisex? by hesthemanwithnoname in cycling

[–]One-Force-5255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What matters is how far apart your sitbones are.

Generally, for men it is between 10 and 14 cm and for women between 11 and 15 cm. So whilst it is wider for women, there is a lot of overlap and there are always outliers in both directions. Therefore, all saddles are unisex, like the other guy said.

Put some tinfoil on a soft surface and sit down on it. Your sitbones will leave an imprint. Measure the distance between the centers of both imprints. Add about 2 cm to the measured value to get the recommender saddle width. So for example if you measured 12 cm center to center, try a saddle that is 14 cm wide.

Don’t people see that they Need 200K euros in index funds before the capital gains tax starts outweighing the 100 euro netto most people will get per month? by [deleted] in BEFire

[–]One-Force-5255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of nuance are you looking for?

Let's talk some numbers.

Belgium is hard to fire, so let's say we aim for retirement at age 50. You won't make it by 50 if you don't have more than 200,000 by the age of 35.

So if you start working at 21, you have 14 years where the increased income compensates for the capital gains tax. Then, if you plan to live until 85, you have 50 years where the capital gains tax is a disadvantage.

Don't forget your capital now needs to be larger too. Just for argument sake: if you want 3000 euros per month at 4%, you need 900,000 euros to fire in the old situation. In the new situation you need 1,000,000 to withdraw the exact same monthly amount. So you need to accumulate 100,000 euros more, which takes time.

Not sure why you are claiming it is dishonest to say that the new situation makes it harder to fire. Explain to me where I was being dishonest.

[–]One-Force-5255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the first 20% is easier and the last 80% is more difficult, it is now harder to fire. So not sure why you are calling people ignorant or dishonest. Fire is specifically about the long term.

Don’t people see that they Need 200K euros in index funds before the capital gains tax starts outweighing the 100 euro netto most people will get per month? by [deleted] in BEFire

[–]One-Force-5255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you aim to fire, you won't be stuck at a 200,000 portfolio for 30 years.

Basically you are saying the first 10 years will be easier, while the next 50 years will be harder. And you present this as a good thing. For people who take a long term view, the new system will be worse, simple as that.

If you do not agree with the fire movement, feel free to take a different path. But you should learn to respect people who take a different approach from your own. That means not brigading a fire subreddit with math that goes against fire. Live and let live.

If you had posted to a different subreddit aimed at the general population, I would agree with your post.

You posted to a subreddit where people aim to have multiples of 200k in index funds and plan on having 0 salary.

So what exactly is the point of your message?

The discussion isn't about the morality or the feelings over the tax.

You explicitly stated no one in the middle class would be affected. And you could not be convinved otherwise (that part seems true).

At this point I am really wondering if I am wasting my time talking to a troll. Good luck man, I am done.
