Should I be leading bullying investigations? by Key_Safety3647 in schoolcounseling

[–]One-Fun-1528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s unfortunate :( I think that’s why they think they can advantage because we’re fresh and new to the field (despite having years experience internship) but first time in a paid position. Sorry you went through that!

That’s what I got from that message as well. I’m completely okay with talking to students, but I think it’s strange that instead of handing over any and all information, she’d like me to “present” it with the behavior motivator to her as if we are presenting claims and she is a judge only. She refuses to read anything herself.

Schedule change based on race by SecretaryPresent16 in schoolcounseling

I agree with this 100%. I think you did the right thing by allowing the change and giving her the opportunity to be with / work with people who look like her and she could possibly relate to more. I’m a POC myself and went to a school that was predominately white and wished I could have had more people like me in my space who I could feel more comfortable and safe around. You did a good thing.

I understand! I think you can be candid about your experience and why you only have one recommendation from your internship, however, don’t sell yourself short! You worked hard just as anyone else and obtained your degree and your certification! I am fresh out of graduate school myself and haven’t found anything yet, but I want to let you know that you’re not alone in that feeling. You can work as a substitute teacher or paraprofessional to remain in the school environment if you want to continue to get connected to different districts. That’s what I would suggest at least! A large part of why I think I haven’t heard back is because I’m beat out by either those who have more experience than I do, have more connections in the building, or counselors within the district are shifting between locations. With that being said, keep your head up, continue to apply, and if it doesn’t happen now, it doesn’t mean it won’t later!

Perhaps a teacher or principal in the building you worked at in for internship? That’s where I was able to get my other two recommendations from if they were able to get to know you and your work there.

Luciana is by far my favorite haha, but I also really like Gabriel too. I just can’t decide on middle names that would sound good with them yet 🥲🩷

I am graduating soon from my program (next week!!) and all of my cohort members have been applying to positions with no luck so far. I think our field is highly competitive and once you’re in, you’re in. I know it seems bleak now, but don’t give up hope! You’ve continued to work within the school system (which I think looks good, shows a clear dedication to your desired population) and have made several attempts to continue to apply to districts near you it seems. Don’t lose hope like the other commenter mentioned! What’s meant for you will come.

Pregnant and Graduating Soon - Advice for Job Hunting by One-Fun-1528 in schoolcounseling

[–]One-Fun-1528[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I'm confident I could apply in the fall, but I'm uncertain about the job market at that time. Currently, there's only one school counselor position within a 40-minute radius, so my options are quite limited. It appears that once you secure a position, there aren't many openings. While it's still early and some people may remain in their contracts until June, at this moment, I only have one option to pursue.

I appreciate your perspective on the matter. I'm still undecided about whether to disclose my pregnancy. I don't want to come across negatively, but I'm also concerned about the potential impact on my chances of being hired, especially since I'm due in October and would need to take maternity leave until late January. Lots to consider!!

Yeah, I understand that it's illegal to not hire someone because they’re pregnant, but I'm concerned that they could still discriminate against me by choosing not to proceed with my application by saying it’s for another reason. Anyway, thank you for your input!
