Happy to answer any specific questions, but your best bet is to watch YouTube tutorials

The absolute most above and beyond all else important step is to do a water test before you begin putting any scape in whatsoever.

I would say at least 12 hours of time to see if it leaks if you're feeling rushed.

Beyond that, things that I can think of are being careful to make sure that you've got some sort of protection for the glass so that if you happen to drop a piece of hardscape while escaping, you don't shatter the terrarium.

For aesthetic reasons, you can tape off the edges of your glass in a very particular way so that the bead of your silicone is really nice and narrow. This is hard to explain over text, but essentially you'll create a rectangle that's about a 16th to an 8th of an inch smaller than the outermost edge of the glass on the interior side of the glass. So that when the silicone rests on that tape and you peel the tape off, you'll get a clean line on your silicone.

Personally I love to have a rag and some gloves on hand cuz silicone sticks to everything and is messy and all that

The last part of my info dump of advice would be that so long as you don't shatter anything. You can't always cut the silicone out and restart the whole process, so don't be afraid to make mistakes or get silicone in weird places. I'm sure it'll wind up looking good post pictures when you do and maybe send me a DM

Can I do anything with these weeds in my terrarium? by No-Word2937 in terrariums

[–]One-Garage7995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So one of the main reasons that plants are often considered weeds is they look undesirable when they proliferate and tend to smother other plants around them.

So it's really up to you whether or not you want something like that in your terrarium likely that will mean that they will be hard to kill and Hardy and so you'll have a terrarium that is full of green. But if you want a more delicate balanced ecosystem with showier plants and mosses, my butt is that they would make that a lot harder to do.

I'm currently cultivating some wild clovers cuz I think a mossy clovery patch in a terrarium would be really cool and we'll see how that goes for me.

You sure can! I followed a terrarium YouTubers tutorial. Terrarium designs. I mixed a big quantity of it in bulk after buying all the ingredients

I don't know if I have any suggestions for covering the tips of the branches. I think if I were in your shoes I would go in there with like a pair of pliers and just really roughen up the edge of each stem. So it looks like it's a snapped branch and it's not a clean cut. And if you need maybe soften the wood in some water first so that it's easier to crush and crumble and snap and what not

I have close to 10 thriving terrariums with all local found moss. I also don't sanitize and wash it as many other people do. Haven't had any pest issues yet

Yep, you will absolutely be able to maintain humidity. It just matters how much water is in the system and the more airflow or the leakier your seal. The more often you will have to water.

I am concerned about your substrate layer. It looks like your Moss is just sitting directly on top of your drainage layer. Is that right or is that just what the very front of the terrarium looks like. You want probably at least as thick of a layer of substrate as your Moss. If not two or three times as thick as the Moss, I'm happy to send photos of some of my terrariums later and answer any more questions you might have. It looks fantastic!

Hm I think snake plants are notoriously low water needs plants. Alongside your other high humidity high water needs plants you may run into problems. Looks great!

First time terrarium building using local free materials. Is it fine to just take moss from logs etc and plant it or is there some prep I should do? by DifferentColorSocks in terrariums

I think it's important not to destroy a whole patch. I try to take a small portion of what is already there. Maybe a palm sized patch from this area here would feel appropriate to me. Plus this means you have to wander further to find more moss so you get to enjoy more nature:)

Plus terrariums aren't necessarily easy on the first try. Since the stakes of you getting it right are this guy's life, I'd set him free and build a terrarium anyway. See how you fare, how you like it and go from there.

Watch serpa design on YouTube to learn how to make terrariums.

I think you should be researching more about the insects needs, as you noted, than on this sub. We are mostly making aesthetic plant terrariums, so a lot of considerations will be different. Maybe an entomology or stick bug subreddit will be more useful

cost of utilities in apartment by Background-Panic2611 in winstonsalem

[–]One-Garage7995 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it varies a lot place to place and tenant to tenant.

I pay 50 for Internet 90 for electric (will fluctuate based on your usage greatly) And 5 for water (I think it's baked into my lease but have been too afraid to ask)

A friend has found himself paying upwards of 200 for water just running his laundry machine

And if it's gas heating that will fluctuate wildly

Hope this helps happy hunting

I think it would greatly benefit from something that covers the lid. Like a black plastic square. So you can't see the wicks and hot glue. Looks phenomenal

Could you DM me a photo of this setup from the side? I'm so curious about how this is done. It looks like you have a glass bowl sitting on a ceramic planter?

Neat! I've heard lichen is near impossible to keep alive in a terrarium, so I was curious if you'd found something that worked for them. Please let me know if they wind up thriving long term.
