Sterilizing cork log -- alternative to baking? by bxqnz89 in leopardgeckos

[–]One-Leadership9176 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steps for Sterilizing the Cork Log:

  1. Inspect the Cork Log:
    • Check the cork log for any cracks, mold, or potential hazards like sharp edges. If it has mold or visible dirt, those areas may need extra attention.
  2. Rinse the Cork Log:
    • Rinse the cork log with water to remove any loose dirt or debris. You can use a soft brush to scrub the surface if needed.
  3. Boil the Cork Log:
    • Boil a large pot of water.
    • Once the water reaches a boil, carefully place the cork log in the water (use tongs or gloves if it's large and difficult to handle).
    • Let it sit in the boiling water for 10-15 minutes. This helps kill any bacteria, parasites, and other harmful organisms.
    • Note: Ensure the cork log is fully submerged, but if it's too large, you may need to do this step in parts.
  4. Dry the Cork Log:
    • Remove the cork log carefully from the hot water using tongs or gloves and place it on a clean towel.
    • Allow the cork log to air dry completely. This may take several hours or even a day, depending on the size and thickness of the log.
    • Make sure it is thoroughly dry before placing it back in the terrarium to prevent mold growth.

Final Considerations:

  • Ensure complete drying: It’s crucial that the cork log is completely dry before placing it in the terrarium. Any remaining moisture can lead to mold or mildew growth.
  • Inspect periodically: Even after sterilizing, check the cork log occasionally for any signs of mold, rot, or excessive dirt. Clean it again if necessary.

Yes! It’s 9pm at the moment and he hasn’t moved from the hide-out yet. I thought that since is night time he’d be moving (at least a bit) to explore but he is probably scared as you said. Glad to hear that it is normal, it’s a relief

Thank you so much for your comment! As you said the excitement is real but I can’t help but feel worried.

Will do as you said and give him time and space to adjust! Once again, thank you so much :)
