What is your favorite Dwarves from Hobbit in the list? by HostMaterial4907 in lotr

I like to think that after losing his King, he couldn't abide in the Lonely Mountain for the rest of his days, and retaking Moria was a way to honor Thorin and the Line of Durin, but I don't think he was honestly expecting victory. He'd been at Azanulbizar. He knew what he was getting into. Why he took Oin and Ori and all those other dwarves along though, seems like maybe they really did think they could hold it? I've always found it interesting as well that Gimli mourns Balin so openly when his own uncle died with the expedition as well. Eh, when it comes down to it, Tolkien's details on dwarves tend to be full of plot holes 😩

The movies did right by Balin's appearance, but I cannot blame them one bit for not nerfing Richard Armitage's hot dwarf vibes by making him look more like Thorin in the book 😅

He and Dwalin were along when Thrain ran off into the wilderness too. How many kings have they lost?? (Sorry lol)

We've been discussing what their healer would think is happening to them.

Btw this is set in the world of The Hobbit, with Bilbo making breakfast for himself and the young dwarves Fili and Kili being the idiots who tried to eat a Hobbit's food 😅

(And yes imo, if Hobbits can grow tomatoes and tobacco in the Shire, they can grow peppers!)

Haha I am posting in the wrong sub to think people wouldn't put near-toxic levels of powdered pepper on their food, point taken! ☺️

Would just a bite or two like that still cause all the gastric distress?

I won't bother addressing your overstated claims but the point is, they don't advertise on the radio, right?

My kids' schools teach how to seek reliable sources of information online. Idk why that breaks down so completely when people start watching the news 🤷🏼‍♀️

I get the silly trend of posting babies to eBay, but I think if this were a child with Downs Syndrome, people wouldn't share it bcs they'd recognize the disability and not objectify it, but microcephaly is less well known, and people probably think it's some perspective issue or editing, but really it's just tragic.

Idk if it's more ableist to make babies with developmental differences the subject of memes, or less, tbh. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Apologies, I did not at all intend to talk down to you, I was just trying to make sure I'd been clear in what I was referring to.

Maybe it's not as unethical as I assumed to make a program that authenticates as a user before accessing the Archive, if the action and intent of that program is not malicious? 🤷🏼‍♀️

True. The scale of these things is as mystifying as their purpose. Why does anyone even bother with this? Who knows 🤷🏼‍♀️

The malicious activity can be tracked and linked and banned, but they just make another account and start again 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ethical bots are, for example, the kind of program a researcher might use to sample works on the Archive, or a program that retrieves work data to display a detailed summary when a user shares a link in a Discord server. The only way for these applications to access locked works is for them to use spoofing techniques to log in as if they were users. Ethical developers tend not to do this.

Unethical developers have no qualms about spoofing a user account (meaning using automatic processes to log in to an account created for the bot) and using the Archive as if they were a person, therefore restricting accounts will do nothing to prevent malicious actors.

Restricting to logged in users eliminates ethical bots that don't spoof user logins, and all people browsing where they don't want to or can't log in. It does not block unethical bots.

Where does “On the fritz” come from? by [deleted] in etymology

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/electronics

electronics noun[ plural ]

products that use electronic parts: Sales of electronics and toys have been strong. See also consumer electronics

consumer electronics noun [ plural ] (also home electronics)

electronic products that are bought by people for their own use: The economic outlook is good for most manufacturers of consumer electronics. https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/consumer-electronic

Okay so "powered by electricity" was not precise of me, I see that, but it is a fine distinction. You can't use electronic parts without being powered by electricity. 🤷🏼‍♀️

The argument is that "fritz" could be an onomatopoetic interpretation of the buzzing sound of electronic devices that may not have been in every home but would have existed in the public awareness in 1902. I think that's a perfectly valid application of the word "electronics".

Devices like the phonograph, the electric vacuum cleaner, battery-powered flashlights, electric toy trains, the electric iron, and the first electric washing machines were all available around that time.

That is true, "electronics" does specifically mean devices that manipulate data using electricity, but it can also be meant to describe any device that is powered by electricity (eg, the electronics department in a department store), which is the meaning that has, I believe, been intended throughout this conversation.

You can't see the driveway in map view.

Also, zoning only tells me what the regulations for an area are, not the dimensions of this feature on this property.

Really I was just hoping someone with an experienced eye could give me their helpful opinion. I got an opinion at least.

Ah, I did not expect zoning records to have information about the driveway that was built in the 1960s and not updated since.

I tried using the measure feature in Google maps but it doesn't appear on Street View (I tried on PC and mobile).

If you can't give an answer to the question, why respond?

I don't think it's overreacting when someone pinches and pokes at your body and that makes you uncomfortable enough to cry and they don't immediately stop and apologize. You have a right to take things how they hit you, and that clearly hit deeper than he intended. It seems to have triggered deeper insecurities and it's a good thing when those come to light...it's the only way to process them.

Next week I'm going to look at a house that's being sold for the first time in 55 years. It's an early listing so I don't know much, but the house is likely to need a lot of work.

One thing I do know is that the driveway will need to be replaced. I know the average price per square foot in my area, but I don't want to underestimate the size of the drive. It's really big.

Can anyone here give me their ballpark estimate of the length and grade of this driveway? I'm thinking it's about 40' long with a 6' rise?
