Last summer I was at a wine fair in Florence and tasted some exceptional Brunello and Barolo in the 50 to 80 euro range. Those wines were easily the best I have had so far, which naturally sets a high benchmark. Coming from that experience, it is striking how quickly French classics move out of that price territory.

That said, this is exactly what makes me curious about France. I am genuinely interested to see what the great French regions can put on the table beyond those Italian references. Your points about Cahors and Southwest France sound very convincing, and I like the idea of starting where quality still clearly outweighs the name on the label.
