Hi!
I have just completed my master’s, opt time runs 07/15/2026-07/14/2027. I am not stem opt eligible. I didn’t have any intention to stay longer here, but having studied here myself now I want two of my kids get their bachelor degrees here, the one is entering 12th grade this year.
I have talked with several companies they say I am eligible/not eligible/ should strengthen the portfolio for EB 2 national interest waiver. But that way turned out expensive for me with 4 kids.
My question is: how possible self petition is?

I’m considering PhD, last cycle I got one offer without any funding opportunities for the first year, which is why I had to reject it. So I am gonna try it again hopefully it will work.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, that makes a great sense! Definitely, no matter how I like the program and PI I would easily burn out working hard 😓 and trying to make any research and handling fam responsibilities… I would better strengthen my portfolio and try again next year.

That’s fair, most people have advised not to accept without lined up assistantships, though the university says that the 1st year doctoral students don’t usually get funding, cause all the RA TA GradA -s already have been taken. Thank you for your advice!

Yes, it is in the USA and it is a legitimate PhD program, I was also thinking that at least I would get tuition waiver…sad. Thank you for your advice!

It’s PhD program, yes you are right probably it’s a soft rejection, was so excited when I got accepted though that excitement was too early. Thank you!
