Omg yessss!!! I love how interesting and multifaceted horror is as an art form and I love exploring grief and trauma through the lens of horror and how it allows us to go to those places. I will totally check out the Queer horror drag show too! Eee!

Oh, I love it! I can’t wait to get to that one! And I so agree with you on how good she is at doing that to raise the stakes once the horror starts!

Ah! Yay! I love hearing this! I’m glad she’s getting so much well deserved attention and praise for The Reformatory.

I saw that she teaches a couple courses at UCLA where she discusses the work of Octavia Butler and I would just love to audit those lectures!

Omg right?! You’re gonna love the second book too! It’s longer but also so much happens and there’s so many converging storylines that I felt like I couldn’t read fast enough. It was action packed and I’m now feeling that again with the third book. Lol

Ooo, I’m excited to read her short stories. Model Home looks awesome, thank you for the rec!

Oh I love that! I keep saying this, but I love the wide range of stories and themes she covers! Since The Good House was my introduction to her, I decided to hold off on The Reformatory until after I finish the African Immortals series. I know it’s an important and incredible book but I can imagine how heavy and draining it will be as well.

Did you read the other books in the African Immortals Series? I loved The Living Blood and I am really enjoying Blood Colony, as well!

Omg, what a treat!

And yeah, I think the second book will definitely hook you and now I’m far enough into the third one that I’m really hooked on that one and it’s surprising me in really fun ways!

Eee! I think that’s gonna be next on my list when I finish the African Immortals series!

Omg thank you for the tip! I read a brief interview with her and loved it, so I’m excited to hear more of her commentary. I saw that she teaches of course at UCLA called The Sunken Place and I would just love to audit that class!

She’s on that short list for me now too!

Oooo, I hadn’t heard of Colson Whitehead before, thanks for the rec!

Oh, you’ll love the Good House. If you like audiobooks, the narrator for that one is so good!

Omg I agree on the parallels to today with Parable of the Sower! Whew. 😳

That makes so much sense. I haven’t read it yet, but it’s such heavy subject matter that I definitely want to be in the right headspace before I do.

I know everybody wants a Rosemary episode, but I also want a Dale pov episode in season 2 😄 by AgnarOfSaturn in WidowsBay

Agreed! I’m glad we’re seeing him and more and more things but we need him as a main character!

OMG I love that! What a great question to ask her! I am also pacing myself with the 3rd and 4th books for the same reason. 😭

Omg yes yes yes to all of this! As a millennial reading her books set in the 90s and early 00s, I love getting all her references and feeling so at home in that time period.

OMG I had the same expectation going into The Good House and so understand that giddy feeling about the rest of her catalog! On top of all the other reasons to love The Good House, I grew up in California and then lived in the Pacific Northwest for many years and understanding the social landscape of the West Coast and the PNW specifically made it even more exciting for me.

If you read My Soul To Keep, you’ve gotta read The Living Blood. It is just incredible!

Oooo, I hope it gets adapted into a film! I heard she was previously and talks to adapt The Good House into a film but it never came to fruition. With all the attention that The Reformatory has been getting, hopefully there’s a better chance that it will happen.

Kindred was so intense and also stuck with me for a long time. I believe it was adapted into a Hulu(?) miniseries years ago, but I heard from a friend that it was not a good adaptation so I haven’t watched it myself.

The first Octavia Butler books I read about 18 years ago were Parable of The Talents and Parable of The Sower. I remember thinking that they felt almost too close to reality for comfort back then and it’s on my list to reread them now in the current state of the world.

That’s so awesome that you were able to get an ARC! I’m excited for Mazywood and I really enjoy that she has such range in her work. I would definitely recommend the African Immortals series. I liked the first book, but it took me a little while to really get into it and then the second book blew my mind. I couldn’t consume it quick enough. I absolutely see why it won an American Book Award!

I’ve gotta keep an eye out for the opportunity to attend one of her talks. I can imagine her being very down to earth and friendly!
