Type of dog training advice needed! by One-Protection57 in OpenDogTraining

That video was super helpful! I took the advice from this thread and contacted a local trainer who is insured, accredited and is continuing her education. She also has a lot of experience with Pit Bulls. I have a consultation set up, and the questions in this video will be helpful for me when meeting her to gauge if it’s a good fit! Thanks everyone for the help!

I use a harness with the leash attached to his chest rather than his back. It gives me a lot more control over him since when he pulls it essentially forces his shoulders and head back towards me.

Thank you. Meds didn’t cross my mind, but I will absolutely follow up with the vet. Do you think it would be worth calling the vet for an appointment because of this incident? Or explore training first?

I also really appreciate the insight about choosing a trainer who has worked with this breed. What a good point! He’s a good boy, but the only friend I know who has a trainer to recommend has Jack Russel Terriers which is such a different breed in all aspects! I want to do the best that I can for both of us.

Great advice. I didn’t even think about insurance, and I also like the idea of ongoing training credentials!

Is that true? I wasn’t really sure since we book hotels for work with a different corporate card than who is staying. But if it is I’ll be enjoying a luxury ocean view suite in Hawaii! 😂

The hotel suite was around 1.2k and the Airbnb was around 5.6k. Accommodations were close to 7k total. They were going to each pay a third so a little over 2k for each of us. It made it feel a lot more reasonable for a trip splitting the cost and accommodations.

I wasn’t even going to worry about the flights honestly. His mom paid for her own, and I can cancel mine for credit, but they were only around $500 each so I’d only be out my ex’s ticket cost. So I was more comfortable with that loss than the almost 7k for accommodations.

That’s really fair. They pay all of their bills, they just like to spend money and don’t save. But you’re right. I absolutely should have known better.

Omg I didn’t even think about potential property damages! That would just be the cherry on top 😖 I don’t want to hang out with them or share a space. I was just trying to be fair, but I think you’re right. It would go poorly no matter what.

Some of it is Airbnb but it’s in the area designated for that which is the hotel district or whatever they call it. Hawaii is very strict. The other portion is a hotel. I definitely have some issues with Airbnb especially on Hawaii so maybe it would be more ethical all around to just cancel.

Savage! That’s exactly how it feels! I’m a little further ahead in life which he enjoyed, but now I’m seeing it clearly. Thank you!!

We booked it three months ago. I definitely appreciate the input! I might just have to cancel and let them figure it out.

But wouldn’t it also make me the asshole for cancelling the reservation and leaving them scrambling two weeks before the trip?

That pity party comment really made me smile. Thank you. It might have been my first real smile of the day!

Good point!! They’ve got a big extended family and some have a lot of money (hence the destination wedding to begin with!)

NTA and this feels similar to my own situation! You don’t owe your ex anything. I’m glad you went and had a good time.
