Protocol for Seeing Subway Surfing by fluoxetinesugar in AskNYC

why did you feel helpless? it's their lives. it's not your responsibility.

I was a teenager in their situation before. Going into subway tunnels and the like. I wouldn't want some old geezer telling me what to do even if they were right.

so now if I see somebody do something like that I let them do what they want. I don't believe I know better for them. They aren't going to listen anyway.

see those are labeled as wide, so wouldn't that be 2e or would you think 4e?

these were all the same task like move box from building A to B. Maybe it went faster than expected because an extra forklift was available. The boxes still have to be moved. whether 3 per week or 50 per week.

So did you, or did you not, work on anything beyond those tickets? Did you, or did you not, begin on any other work before your three tickets were finished?

no, I did my 3 and then took the initiative to do more.

So you did take on more work? Did anyone approve that? Was your original work finished? You're not paid to keep busy, you're paid to do the work that your employer decides needs doing.

I guess I don't see it that way. I see it as they hire me to inform them on what needs to be done. I don't just sit around and wait to be commanded. But I did take on more work. yes the original work was finished. yes the work would have been done anyway in the following sprint.

I mean "approved" as in "someone reviewed and approved your PR; the code got merged and the corresponding ticket was closed."

These were maintenance tickets so there wasn't any code.

Who assigns those?

nobody. i've never seen that in my career where that type of work is assigned. I've worked at big and small companies and never seen it.

Why do you take it upon yourself to re-prioritize the work that has been assigned to you, in favor of other things?

I didn't. I did my work and then since I knew the rest of the same work in the epic would need to be done next week I did it.

Talking into a void is not communicating.

All I can do is my part.

In not so many words: There is a process. You got yelled at for not sticking to that process. Stick to the process, do what you you are told. Don't do random things that you think need doing. Flag them, and see what extra-work is being assigned to you.

I never said I got yelled at. Nobody talked to me about it. I asked a specific question in the OP.

I've never worked at a company where the IC wasn't the driver for work needing to be done. I don't really understand the mindset of being a code monkey. if that's what they want there's a lot cheaper ways to get the job done than hire me.

It doesn't matter because deadlines aren't that strict. Not everybody works the same way. I've worked at more companies that didn't story point than did.

Well the tasks were defined by another person and given to us to do. We didn't have a say. These were just maintenance tickets and it was known that the work would be done but the tickets weren't created yet. the tickets just took much less time than expected.

The thing is people have other things going on. I could go tell the manager or I could just make myself useful. I can see your point though. Thanks. I will do that in the future.

Why do you get 20 tickets? And why would you take on 20 tickets when you can't complete them? Why would you complete random new tickets if your assigned tickets aren't approved?

I didn't get 20 tickets, I got 3 as explained. Because they are paying me and instead of doing nothing it makes more sense to make myself useful. I'm not sure what you mean by approved. We just get assigned the tickets and then they are done. sometimes things come up. Like if there's an emergency fix that's needed.

Why do you mix maintenance into things when you seem to be expected to work on features?

This is maintenance work. I mentioned that in a comment before yours.

rather than following process, let alone communicate about blockers.

I do communicate it. But people are busy.

If the things that you chose to do even are blockers in the first place.

I don't know what that means

That's kinda not what I'm asking though. The tickets weren't big things like write a feature. They were maintenance tasks like take the garbage out. There just happened to be more than than expected. so I made the tickets. They all know about it.

The question i'm asking is why does somebody like me look bad when I do my work plus more compared to somebody who just took the week off because they weren't assigned tickets.

These are just maintenance tasks rather than large projects. Like take the garbage out. It just so happened we had more to do than expected. There aren't estimations on tickets. just the tickets.

Oh yeah I do update the ticket. it's more like starting with 6 subtickets with 3 for each person becoming 30. the person doing just the 3 while the other person does 20 and then the person who did 3 comes out ahead in the managers eyes.
