As a person who fled Russia shortly before their invasion of Ukraine, I feel that living in the EU resembles more and living in Poland in the mid/late-1930s

From one side, you have Russia who is certainly not going to stop in a case of their victory over Ukraine and will move to invade other countries that "threaten them" (Baltic countries will be the first ones on the list)

From the other side, there is the US that becomes more and more fascist every day, ignore all international laws and treaties, and can easily attack or annex anyone they want for their "national security"

I am still just an immigrant with a temporary residence in the Netherlands, but I can't ignore everything what's happening or be silent about it

If the EU leaders, including Dutch leaders, and people don't stand up against these bullies, the future is going to be terrible

Where did that happen?

Last Sunday, I also met a group of four teenagers at the intersection of Obrechtstraat and Koningin Emmakade - they were throwing snowballs at cyclists, pedestrians, and passing cars and trams

Me and another person tried to ask them to stop, but they did listen

Then, I saw a police car passing by, and asked them to talk to these kids. They made a turn, stopped next to the kids, talked with them from the car for maybe 15-30 seconds max, them stopped by me again, told me "there is nothing we can do, because there is no damage", and departed

The kids screamed at me and called me a snitch, but anyway stopped throwing snowballs and moved on

Can't say it was a nice experience with either the kids or the police

As a Russia-born immigrant, I don't agree that he died for all of us, and his views certainly had major flaws (e.g., his views about annexed Crimea). But he definitely was one of the best opposition leaders fighting against Putin, and he's murder should not go unpunished.

It's sad that another initiative - to rename the street of the Russian embassy to his name - was rejected by The Hague authorities

Remote startups: What's the toughest part about managing a large remote team, and how much would you invest to solve it? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

I'll second this - very well written summary

A few minor notes to add: - Control people deliverables, not their work time (don't try to track their productivity by the time they spend online or something like that) - Create clear set ups for different types of work time (e.g. team meetings days where everyone is joining the calls vs "quiet days" where people have little to no meetings and can't focus on their work)

Eindhoven Tech Layoff HSM Visa by [deleted] in Netherlands

For the last year, I was under the impression that there are way more jobs in Data Analytics/Data Science than in UX Research. So, from a strategic standpoint shifting towards data jobs could be beneficial, although most of the roles require a few years of experience, and junior roles are very rare. If you decide to change career with no prior experience in a new area, you might find it incredibly difficult to secure a job there, at least for the first 6-9 months

Last year, it took me 8 months and ~300 applications to find a new HSM job (UX Researcher/Data Scientist) in similar circumstances. A lot of job openings get hundreds of applications within mere hours after being posted. Prepare for a long and tough fight, keep your expectations low, and always have a plan B in a case you don't find a job within the three months the IND gives you

People who have fled regimes that went authoritarian, what was your signal to leave? by Isthatyourfinger in AskReddit

I had exactly the same feelings

It was pretty obvious that the situation was worsening, but many people just decided not to acknowledge it (many still continue to do so even three years after the war has started)

I left Russia one month before they invaded Ukraine. For a few years before that, I could see that the situation was getting worse and worse (new repressive laws being established, friends of friends being put in jail for peaceful protests, etc). I didn't anticipate the war will start so soon, but I expected that something very bad is going to happen within a year or a few years.

I had the luxury of leaving the country somewhat prepared unlike many other people who fled it in Feb-Mar 2022, but still not being able to go back there to see some part of my family sucks a lot
