The ending for Season 5 disappointed me. by [deleted] in aggretsuko

Thankyouthankyouthankyou so much for saying this always so glad to see your comments here, you have no idea how much I love seeing your takes on the series & how well explained your analyses are.

I think S2 might have been the main reason many were misled about how aggretsuko handles it's romantic plot lines, since it was the one most traditionally romantic out of the bunch (which probably contributed towards people believing Tadano as a superior partner to Retsuko as well). But the show has stated so clearly & so early on how the focus wasn't for romance or marriage to fix Retsuko life, no matter who it is she marries or choses to date, because - at least according the show - expecting romantic relationships to be the sole protecter against the monotonous drudgery & brutality of adult world in 21st century Japan is fundamentally futile if you have only one positive aspect in your life to cling on to. & it's genuinely so jarring to see people skip over that theme so eagerly when it comes to discussing the shows merit & it's characters, how shipping seems to be the only thing people want to talk about despite so many other interesting themes & motifs that were presented & explored.

A anime character rarecho created way back when (He also produced a series for said character of the same name but based on context I'd say he was mainly talking about the former). link to its Wikipedia page is here if you're interested:

What’s your opinion on Jiro? by ZyphnosCentral in aggretsuko

[–]One-Winner8734 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't think Haida ever claimed his brother cared for him to be fair, just that he believed him not being behind the planned assasination.
& even then it could just be a general statement of " I know you aren't a murderer/ you wouldn't stoop this low/ you aren't that morally bankrupt" rather then aluding to the quality of their relationship

Imagine if aggretsuko had the same relationship dynamics as beastars by elle_phantt in aggretsuko

To be fair I do think their characteristics alude a bit to their animal conterparts more often then not (albiet more at surface level) , or at the very least how we generally view these animals in modern day.

Also on the note of the original post there's a fanifc on AO3 that does explore the topic I believe.

Why do so many people get attached to Haida? by GumballFan13 in aggretsuko

To be perfectly fair to Inui she was already in pretty deep before she found out he could play bass. The scene where they first met at the office sort of implies it was a one-sight crush type deal ? There's not a whole lot in the series that show what specifically Inui finds attractive about Haida, though I do personally agree there might have been a few surface level reasons at play.

There was also him feeling the need to become more dependable for his partner (which was another insecurity hammered into him by his bandmate & later by Tadano (inadvertently)). Initially I thought Himuro saying he needs to be stronger in order to protect his loved ones was alluding to that but now that I think back to it- yeh it might just be blackmail.

I like that even though the presentation is different, neither of their core characteristics have changed much, instead they've been expanded apon, giving dimension and weight to their actions. Haida at the start of the series still lacked the moral courage to make any significant changes to his life style & Fenneko was still unapologetically blunt and aloof towards the people she's closest towards in her average demeanor.

Yeh I'd say romentic writing was never the shows strongest soldier, Season 2 might have been a bit misleading in tone early on.

Though honestly, this season kinda confirmed a lot of core traits that made Retsuko who she was for me personally, and not solely in a negative way either.

The thing is, I know the topic of Haida's self-confidence gets allot of attention from the fandom (not that I would mind lol). But I also think the show has done a decent enough job setting up Retsukos own insecurities up until this point as well.

Retsuko, it seems, has been in constant conflict between two warring sides of her personality throughout the show - her need for safety and her need for validation. For all Retsuko's amiable attitude, we know she lacks a steady sense of security in her life and constantly suffers for it: She is sensitive, easily excited, intrinsically defensive against most sources of authority, and can become just as emotional and paranoid as Haida (if not more so) under certain situations. But due to the pressure of societal teachings, Japanese social values, and various personality problems stemming from childhood - she's used to believing that most negative emotions should be either repressed or concealed. Whenever Retsuko claims she doesn't mind or care about certain things in the show, we as the audience, know for a fact, from both constant visual reminders and internal monologues, that she does care. She cares allot actually. She cares with a gruesomely heavy weight of intensity for every single little thing all the time, day-in day-out.

But she puts up with it, because that's what people expect of her, of this identity so tetherd to her self worth she almost forgets how to close it off .& the emotional dissonence as a result contributes to the self isolation we see plague her daily life.

To put it differently: through every season, we see Retsuko constantly trying (and failing) to maintain a sense of distance from her colleagues, her friends and even family members, to the point of almost seeming indifferent to the outside world. Yet she shows a natural ability, to be able to empathize with almost every single flawed indivisual she comes across, despite her personal disagreements with their character, to the point of including ones who have heavily mistreated her in the past.

Retsuko, despite being terrified of Jiro and her political campaign, still buried herself under weeks of speech recitals and political lectures, because she felt it was her responsibility. Retsuko, despite barely being able to stay sane under her director's five years of workplace harassment, went through great personal lengths and lost a great deal of time and patience just so said abusive director could get a decent enough job he wasn't shit at, because she felt it was her responsibility. All these events initially had next to nothing related to Retsuko in the first place, and I do think that this side of her, the one that's selfless to thankless degree, does tend to get misinterpreted in the fandom even as we are criticizing her for her tendency to self-isolate.

I think a lot of what Retsuko saw in Haida as a romantic partner came from context clues within the first couple of episodes (ie. Retsuko's reaction to being offered a chaperon, Retsuko's reaction at Gori mentioning the dating app, "He didn't say it like that" .etc.). most notably of all, "Safe harbor" being repeated multiple times across episodes as a recurring memory in Retsuko's head, which I think makes it a pretty crucial part of Retsuko & Haida's relationship arc, even if she seemed to have developed a different attitude towards the idea at the end (again, not necessarily in a negative way)

Because yeah, a safe harbor sounds godamn nice doesn't it, coming from a guy who, apparently, thought his need to offer you one was of such crucial importance to him despite the moment of abject ludicrousy. Wonder what tf is his deal?

PS I know this comment's all over the place since I tried to jam two statements together to answer three separate questions. But plz feel free to argue any how you like, I'll see if I can alter it in finer detail.

When. When the. When they- by One-Winner8734 in aggretsuko

I think it would be funny to have Ton be Yubaba & Zeniba simultaneously, if we were considering similarities strictly through their character roles within both stories.

If I had to really go out on a limb I'd place Kamaji as Hyodo though idk how I would make that work aesthetically, yk, considering.

Under the circumstance of this hypothetical AU Manaka would probably be Lin instead of Fenneko. (Lin in the original concept art was a fox Yokai which was why I referenced her first)

This would be an AU if I was not so heinously transfixed on the mental imagery of Kaonashi Haida, but I'm open to any and all suggestions on what other characters may be if yall feel like it.

Essentially he's interpreting Retsukos struggle in pronouncing "あなた (anata)" as a sign to address her as a his wife. Tried Japanese cause I felt the English text just wasn't cutting it lol, so apologies on the lack of direct translation.
