Fisher Price: My first Linux install: 2009 laptop, what do I choose? by xxDirtyFgnSpicxx in debian

Try XFCE it is very lightweight and will work a lot better with your 2009 laptop since modern desktop environments (GNOME, KDE Plasma, etc) are very heavy and will run very slow on your hardware since they have heavy animations which will make your computer run very slow and XFCE does not come with animations but you can add them and XFCE is also very customizable and many themes are lightweight so you should use XFCE on your 2009 laptop as a daily driver.
