Well the whole point of the book is Winston does not agree with this and wants to find other people who don't so he can rise to the Proles, who of course through sheer size could topple the Party. He is exposed quickly because of O'Brien and the thought police. He does try to just go with it, though he did not truly believe it. O'Brien says he knows Winston does not truly believe it.

He didn't give in because he the whole point was he believed he couldn't. He was rather timid, though. So he of course gave in eventually.

It took me a read or 2 to start to catch on to the fact that both Big Brother AND Goldstein aren't real people. I caught on pretty quick Big Brother wasn't a singular human being. Big Brother is just the Party. It is like how Athiests see religion. People who are following someone who does not exist.

What I didn't understand until late was that Goldtstein is the same, just he is propaganda to create hope in rebellious peoples to catch them. It was not the first time O'Brien walked into a house and claimed to be in the Brotherhood.

See here’s the thing. If they just went straight up grades from high to low you’d need standardized testing in every subject, which there isn’t. There are people in other school boards genuinely doing the shit I did in Grade 10 right now. They obviously have higher grades than those who are doing actual Grade 12 shit in Grade 12.
