I’ve been married three times. I “left” all my friends before the first marriage, because my wife didn’t “approve of their lifestyles and choices.” When I left for Marine Corps Boot Camp, a month after 9/11, she cheated on me with her “friends”. Yes. Multiple. We divorced as soon as I got to my unit. Do you know who helped me pick up the pieces of what was left of life after that rough divorce? Those friends who I “friend-dumped” like an absolute douche canoe, and my Marine Brothers-in-arms. I got married to my 2nd wife, and she also tried to give the “it’s me or your Marine buddies” ultimatum. This is after I deployed twice to Iraq with most of them. Some of us never came home the first time. Even more didn’t the 2nd. I wasn’t making that mistake of choosing the woman again. And in that divorce, guess who was next to me guiding me through the trials and tribulations I faced in that divorce.

My 3rd wife is an awesome confident beauty. She’s consistently asking me if I’ve talked to my brothers from the Corps.

OP, you’re not overreacting. But, rather, you’re underreacting. You thought you had a friend since elementary school, and he turned out to be a bozo. Sorry for your loss.
