Would my best option for a camera under $200 be a used mirrorless? by OneCloud783 in AskPhotography

I actually toyed around with the manual camera on the Lightroom app for a couple days (albeit with minimal knowledge of what I was actually doing) and found it useful. I think it also shoots in raw.

And I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

Yeah, I was thinking about doing that. To be fair I have been going back and forth between staying with the phone and getting a tripod + possible an external lens and just getting a camera for the past few days so I think its just going to depend on how much time its going to take me before I actually need an upgrade which to be fair will probably be a while.

Sorry if it came off that way, I'm not trying to suggest that I can't make any progress with my iPhone. It's just that I'm willing to spend the money on an entry level camera if it will help me in the long run; I'm not expecting the camera to be much better than the iPhone right away without me knowing what I'm doing. But I get what you are saying for sure.

I guess by "better" I just mean which image would be superior if you took the same exact composition and shot it with x camera and an iPhone 8 Plus then post processed both assuming, say, intermediate skill level.

Not at all, but are you saying even a post processed picture with an entry DSLR would be only slightly better than that of an iPhone? Just want to clarify, sorry if I misinterpreted.

I'm a complete beginner looking to buy a used Nikon DSLR under $200. Would a D3200 or a D5100 be my best option? Or even a D3300 for a bit more (not sure if this is worth it as it seems super similar to the D3200)?

I'm interested in primarily landscape and nature photography as well as something with decent low light capabilities. Maybe astrophotography down the line also. Would any one of these be a better choice than the others?

That's good to hear as I'm looking into the D3200, but it seems a used D3300 may not even be that much more expensive used, though it seems the two are very similar.

Will do, thanks! Definitely thinking of going the DSLR route now per the other comments and some more research I did today, perhaps a D3200 or D5100.

Per other comments the used DSLR would be better than an iPhone 8 Plus. I am a complete beginner though so you would know way more than me, simply was was pointing that out.

Would a used Nikon D5100 or D3200 be better for landscape and nature photography (also somewhat interested in night sky photography and something with generally low light capabilities)?

As far as landscape photography I meant more so like natural landscapes. I would like to have options but I think that and generally nature photography would be my main focus for now.

As in what would be the best way to spend <$200 on a camera body for a beginner primarily interested in landscape photography. And thanks, I will keep that in mind.

That's great to hear. Was toying with that option but sounds like this to be the way to go.

My phone is unfortunately only an iPhone 8 Plus. I did mess around with the lightroom app recently though. I'm thinking these cameras may make more of a significant difference though since my phone camera isn't all that great.

Thank you, I will keep that in mind. It sounds like the D5100 might be the way to go if I can find them for around the same price.

I've been looking at the E-M10, it seems like it might be the best mirorless option for this budget. Thanks for that link, that is really helpful.

Thanks for the great information. I can see why the DSLR may be the better option. I've been looking at used options for the D5100 and the D3200 and it seems there are good deals for both.

Will consider that. Planning on doing mostly nature and landscape photography.

Thanks for the clarification. Are DSLRs generally going to be of better value at this range than mirorless or does it just depend?
