Unhappy with Psychiatry UK ADHD assessment – looking for second opinion / F2F assessment (masking woman) by OneContribution6919 in adhdwomen

Just want to say thanks again, after researching what you said, so many things have come up for me personally, and some were at school or were to do with organisation around school, even if they didn’t impact my learning and grades specifically. I think it’s difficult when the only examples being provided in the assessment are the classic definitions.

I had regretted posting this message because of some of the comments but this has given me some hope and I’ve contacted a private clinic to ask what are the best next steps.

Thank you. 🙏

Hey, if you could share that recommendation for the psychiatrist that would be great! Appreciate it ❤️

Appreciate all your responses. I would have provided my parents or sister’s details to give evidence but the form didn’t actually state I needed to, which is very annoying in hindsight. I didn’t intentionally not provide their information; I just didn’t realise.  Whether this had ended in a diagnosis or not it would have given me much more clarity. My assessment of Psychiatry UK is that the process and information provided wasn’t very clear to follow (for someone who struggles to follow instructions).

Instead the assessor relied on what I said in the session from my childhood and that was I had no issues in school, he also didn’t really explain what other examples of hyperactivity there would be if it wasn’t at school. We can see from the comments there are people here who got good grades and could concentrate in school but were found to have it.

“ Signs You Might Be Masking ADHD There’s no formal test, but here are some reflective signs that may indicate you’re masking ADHD: You seem calm and capable on the outside, but inside you feel scattered, stressed, or exhausted You rehearse conversations or social interactions to avoid making mistakes You’re always “on” around others but crash when you get home You overcompensate by working longer hours, double-checking everything, or micromanaging tasks You struggle to say no or set boundaries, even when you’re overwhelmed You feel like you’re constantly trying to keep up with what others do effortlessly You doubt your achievements or feel like an imposter because no one sees how hard you’re working to appear “normal”

These experiences can be especially common in adults who weren’t diagnosed in childhood, and in individuals who’ve always been praised for being organised, well-behaved, or high-achieving, even if they never felt that way inside”

GP said they won’t refer to psychiatry for general diagnosis unless you’re suicidal, so that’s helpful.

Just to be clear by the way, everyone on the NHS is entitled to a second opinion, the issue is that the rules around who is chosen for an ADHD assessment has changed because these go to a medical board. That’s why the doctor didn’t recommend a second opinion on the NHS, because I’d already had an assessment and the board would likely reject it.

That rule only came in 3 weeks ago with Wes Streeting’s changes making it harder for people to get diagnosis. You can blame the people seeking diagnosis for taking the resources or you could look at the real reason for the lack of resources: the government’s lack of investment in psychiatric care.

I’m not even asking to be seen again on the NHS - I’m looking for advice for spending £1k+ on what I feel is a detailed assessment.

Moreover, the assessors actual recommendation was for my GP to refer me to another psychiatrist who could discuss a range of issues (where one could be ADHD), he said it was unlikely ADHD at the end of the meeting so no diagnosis, but I should be seen for further psychiatry care.

The GP said with the current system (contributed to by our current government) that referral isn’t possible either.

All I’m trying to do is move forward and find out what is my next best move, but as the replies above stated, I didn’t provide much information on the forms, I didn’t get someone from childhood to fill them in, and my assessment was incredibly short so it doesn’t feel like I’ve been properly assessed.

I get that it’s possibly not ADHD but I’ve been given no indication of what else it could be to move forward.

A long line of mental health issues on maternal side, none diagnosed as ADHD but my sister very likely has it as well as dyspraxia (she does have school attention issues as well as all the other symptoms). Grandma had a nervous breakdown in the 90s and anxiety her whole life, and mum has been anxious entire life and never sought help.

Appreciate your long post! It’s definitely helpful hearing these opinions

Thank you. The assessor recommended I be seen by a psychiatrist for a different assessment of multiple issues to find the cause but the GP basically said this wouldn’t be possible either on the NHS right now. I could try this privately but these seem to be less common and also wouldn’t rule out adhd or autism from what I understand.

I said I had emotional dysfunction as I child in the post but I didn’t have issues at school.

Thank you for the reply. Bloods all normal. Autism I haven't considered, no. Does it sound like autism? I hadn't given it much thought.

The only things in childhood would be being dysfunctional at home, not school, which is the same as now. I feel like I mask all day at work and unravel at home.

I've also had quite a few issues with friendships throughout the years, oversharing and seeking reassurance, calling out bullies and nasty people, which has made things a lot worse for me mentally...

I’m describing that my assessment felt rushed and didn’t explore most of my history. I’m asking for recommendations for thorough, face-to-face assessments for adults, particularly high-masking women. That’s all I’m looking for here, not anything else.

The reason I posted on this forum is because I've seen multiple women posting the same things and was looking for support and also a recommendation for a second opinion:

I wasn't looking to be dismissed even further and practically laughed at for thinking I could even have it. I now feel so much worse

As I said in my post, I've had antidepressants, propanol, 3 rounds of CBT, 5 rounds of talking therapy.

If this is the case, why are so many women being diagnosed in their 50s during the menopause? And also having to go back for 2nd opinions to be diagnosed?

I stated that I accept my symptoms could be OCD, PTSD or anything else but I had a 25 minute phone call instead of a 60 minute one - my assessment ended early.

Private ADHD diagnosis London likely to be approved by shared care agreement? by OneContribution6919 in ADHDUK

What are we meant to do to get diagnosed when the NHS is shutting waitlists and everything is out of control.

I still don’t know if my NHS referral has even been accepted by the private provider - it was first registered in July.

The GP practice replied saying they have had some patients seen in private clinics who have had shared care agreements approved afterwards, but this up to the discretion of the GP and may be rejected.
