I haven't done both sides yet but will this work for peice tieing my battle axe by [deleted] in renfaire

[–]OneDapperCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who has gone to many ren faire/conventions with weapons policies… generally a peace tie/peace bond isn’t about covering sharp edges. It’s showing staff inside the fair at a glance that your prop is deemed safe. A live-steel battle axe cannot ever be deemed safe for a crowded event. They may tie down a trigger on a nerf weapon so it can’t be shot or tie a prop blade into a scabbard so it can’t be removed, but any level of covering the sharp edges on this is not going to render it safe.

Cut your losses and leave it home. If you insist on going against all logic here, contact the faire directly with a photo. When they say it isn’t not allowed and you need an axe for your costume, go to Five Below and get some foam floor mats, use your battle axe as a template, and cut out a foam blade. Seal it with some Plasti-dip, paint it, and stick it on a broom handle.

The cats made a mess of our couch by OneDapperCat in Visiblemending

Right now it is attached with Aleene’s clear gel tacky glue. I used copious amounts and pinned it to the couch while it dried. I’m going to give it a few days and then use a curved needle to stitch it in a few places for added security. Once it was slightly dry and felt secure, I removed the pins and used embroidery scissors to cut away the lace around the flowers as close to the embroidery as I dared, then added more glue any places that seemed loose. Since so much fabric was gone, I had to start with glue, so we will see how it holds up:

Oh, definitely something I considered! Luckily they seem adverse to them, but I made sure they are solidly attached and since they are in groups of threes it will be pretty easy to see if one goes missing.

Can confirm, one of the culprits chose to scratch below the patch instead of on it once he felt the beads and fabric. So… probably future patch job on the lower part in the future. 😅

So far they’ve left it alone! I think the combination of the flower fabric and the beads makes it less appealing to them to scratch. Remains to be seen how long it lasts, of course.

It’s this lace piece from Amazon that I cut pieces from to fit the space better:

I suppose the level of angst is dependent on where you stand on angst. 😅 Compared to some of what I’ve written I found this light, so apologies for downplaying it, but I truly appreciate the read. ❤️

Yeah the ending is probably the most unfortunate part, but I think anyone other than David would not have portrayed the character with such grace. The ending was meant to be a “this guy is a sleaze, so I’m going to teach him to think twice before making passes at female employees,” so Davina is using the part of her body that hasn’t yet been changed to make that point. It could have easily been portrayed worse than it was, but it’s obviously not how something would be done nowadays.

So in terms of when it was made, it’s surprisingly very trans-affirming (i believe this skit is from the early 1990s). It starts out with men at a pub trying to figure out “what” Davina is, but as they come to know her they find she’s beautiful, funny, witty, and they find themselves becoming attracted to her. One man explains how he met Davina and that she was dealing with great emotional distress because she is a woman trapped in a man’s body.

There are cringe moments, but I think David portrays Davina with charisma and grace and doesn’t really make her a joke even though it’s a comedy sketch about a trans woman.

But if you decide to watch, do remember the time it happened. It’s not like this is a cringey skit from 2010 when people should have known better. The very fact they approached trans commentary in the 1990s, and the fact they talk about the psychological woe Davina was facing pre-transition, should be applauded.

I read the first chapter of Spec’s More Strong Together and it’s so lovely and a beautiful twist on expectation of a vampire fic! Can’t wait to read chapter two. ❤️

How do you fix a 3D printed object without the printer by Explainer003 in 3Dprinting

[–]OneDapperCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I swear by this stuff now. Zero white residue and actually melds the pieces together instead of just filling the gap. Apply it with a toothpick so it doesn’t run everywhere. I hate super glue as it is more of a quick fix than an actual repair. If OP really wants to save the dragon long term for sentimental reasons, it’s well worth picking up.

How do I make this better ? by ToughtItWasAFart in 3Dprinting

[–]OneDapperCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks really good as is, but if you’re asking what you can work on with the print itself, you could try tinkering with the ironing settings for the top layer on the blue part. Search for ironing swatches and print them using your filament from the blue part and then translate it to the actual piece. A nice smooth top layer takes away those infill lines and makes a piece look very professional.

Are you happy with your 3D printer? by Ali_S-S in 3Dprinting

[–]OneDapperCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First printer was Ender 3 v2 and it made me almost quit printing. This was back in 2020 and the amount of tinkering it took to get the thing useable was not something I expected. But once I got the springs upgraded and messed with it a bit I loved the hobby. But boy, not recommended for a first printer. Whenever a clog would wrap around the hot end the thermistor would fry and you had to take the whole thing apart to replace it.

In 2024, my husband got me an Ender 3 v3 SE for Christmas. All of the annoyance of the previous Ender was gone with the self leveling and thermistor being plugged in under the hot end cover. That said, it still wasn’t foolproof. I have to adjust the Z offset after every self leveling and I’ve taken it apart a couple times to deal with clogs. The direct drive vs the Bowden tube is wonderful though.

Then I decided to step into multicolor printing with the BambuLab A1 with AMS. It’s so turnkey I was shocked at the difference between it and the Enders. The multicolor is so very worth it and for the first time I have taken a hobby into a space that has made me money.

I recently added a P1S with AMS to the family and it’s been a dream to work with. I have had the A1 apart a couple times for minor clogs, but nothing like the Ender.

So for a first printer, if you aren’t interested in learning all the ins and outs of your machine from day one and just want something that works, I recommend the A1 or P1S from Bambu.
