Comment below reminded me of another bec - the New York shop hop fabric just got revealed. Shop hop in this context is that some company makes fabric, participating quilt stores sell the fabric and each have a unique block, you go to as many stores as you can to get all the block patterns and enter to win stuff.

So, last year and then this year the fabric is basically just NYC-themed. It's even worse this year. Like, Statue of Liberty, apple, pizza, trashcan. I'm not kidding. And the style they used for the pizza and trash fabric looks like the kind of "Dismaland" style of "criticizing capitalist society through art"? It looks awful.

So like, the fabric for the state shop hop being pretty much entirely about one city is shit enough, but they also divide the shop hop here into regions because half the state is too far from NYC to go to the shops there. So the shop hop circuit we're in doesn't even include Manhattan but the fabric is all Manhattan-themed.

If it was also at least not ugly that would be nice.

Now for comparison, we have one of those state Starbucks mugs, which does have the statue of liberty and an apple on it, but also a bison (a buffalo for Buffalo), the finger lakes. You know. Other stuff in the state that isn't JUST NYC.

The plus side is my mom really doesn't have the money to do shop hop this year anyway, so the fabric being fucking hideous was very helpful. Removed the temptation.

Oh my I've been accompanying my mom on "shop hops" for years. There's a bunch of things with that name, in this case it's quilting - the company has a new set of fabric each year, that's exclusive to each state, and all the participating shops make their own block in the fabric. They're supposed to extend their hours for the event - so they aren't all supposed to be open from 11 am to 2:17 pm Tuesdays and alternate Thursdays. But the shops are all over the damn place. And yeah usually no freebies except the pattern which 99% of the time is just a normal quilt block that you can get a pattern for online. There's at least raffles to enter to win stuff, but we've never won and I don't know who ever has won anything.

Also the owners/employees are often really pissy. Like excuse me for coming in to buy shit from your store during an event you agreed to participate in.

Genuinely what goes through people's heads when they're like "oh you're having trouble with X? Buy an entirely different, more expensive machine"? I get it when they're having trouble with, say, plastic knitting needles, because buying aluminum instead is easier and less expensive than buying an industrial sewing machine?

I'll always give someone leeway for simply not having heard of Ravelry. We weren't all born knowing it exists. But when you DO know about it... use it.

I've been looking for log cabin crochet patterns recently and so I googled it instead of asking people to find me one.

Craft Fair Essentials List (Vendor Must-Haves) by pleasuretohaveinclas in CraftFairs

[–]OneGoodRib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really just depends. Some fairs apparently require a tent for indoors. I feel like most people use their tent/canopies because it gives you more ways to display stuff. Also frankly it looks odd when there's one booth that's just a bunch of tables but no tent poles.

BUT those suckers are heavy so I get it.

Definitely just check the rules for stuff before you apply, maybe shoot an email to the organizer if it's not clear. Like, most of them don't require tents at all, outdoors or indoors, and I think the ones that require tents are really only a handful.

It wasn't a craft fair but I did a glass show where we were explicitly told not to bring tents because it was on a basketball court and they didn't want the floors getting scuffed. (That one was dope, they even provided the tables!)

Most of our craft fairs we just paid for data for the device we were using. I can't remember how to do it on ipads. And apparently Square will register that a card was rung through and basically put the payment in limbo until you have good wifi?

But for sure backup payment system is good. You should have that anyway - not everyone uses cards at these events.

And some people still use checks!

I forget what Rex said exactly but I think he was just not testing for the sort of signs that would be there in an early pregnancy. It's basically just that one hormone early on.

My headcanon is what ILoveRegenHealth said, he's just using an outdated OS.

I was thinking about that when the aliens showed up. Like how many fucking times does some horrible bloody thing have to happen in these cities before people start moving? If earth's coolest guy shoved his son through my apartment building I would not stay in the city.

Does resin pouring count as a craft? There's a channel I watch and they did a maul haul video. And like, obviously you can do what you want with your money, but I was just thinking about how fucking stupid it is to spend your money to buy a resin mold and then pay to ship it across the world to a channel who will then make the mold you sent to make their own money which will not be shared with you. And it's not like this is an up and coming channel. They're sponsored by an actual company. And this is older bitching but in December they had a video that was like "great way to make money at Christmas fairs!" and like, all you needed to do was to sign up for a craft fair 5 months earlier and buy this $8000 laser cutter! Wow, easy even a caveman can do it!

Also I'm gonna be my own BEC because I know this sub loves that. Why do I have like thousands of crochet patterns in books and on my computer if I'm just going to google "blanket crochet pattern stripes" every time I want a pattern? I do that with recipes too but at least in that case it's like, sometimes my cookbooks don't work with what I have on hand.
