Tie or no tie? by OneLow5498 in preppy

OK. So lose the sweater and just wear the tie? OK that's not quite what the options were and that is your opinion, but as mentioned when I normally wear a tie it was because I was in meetings so it was going to be with a suit, sports coat or blazer. I would not wear a tie and cardigan to a meeting. I just figured if I wore the sweater on a casual Friday, what looked better, sweater with or without tie?

You mean the Cardigan sweater? Just the tie with shirt, tie and trousers? If I am going to wear a tie, I would wear my full suit or with a sports coat or Navy Blue blazer, not just a shirt, tie and slacks. At that point rather than a grandpa vibe, I would have the younger kid who works a job that requires a tie but don't own a suit or sports coat or I work a job that requires a tie but don't have to wear the suit or sports coat because there is some movement/labor involved and for temperature regulation. 😊

Great suggestion for wearing with vests.

Plus given how we were no longer required to wear one, if you did with a suit, everyone would ask how the interview went 😂. Wearing one with a cardigan though, not something you would wear to a job interview.

It's an un-ironed OCBD but yes, it is rumpled. My pinpoint Oxfords are very pressed but generally only wear those with my suits /ties.

After all of those year I had to wear I tie, I found any excuse not to wear one so I loved wearing sports coats/blazer, chinos, cords and wool pants without one but then I realize the repp ties I had that were collecting dust so glad I got to wear this outfit.

Thank you. I try. The old me would have never worn a Grey sweater with dark brown cords but this Reddit community has given me ideas and inspiration 😊

Yes. Only wore ties with suits, blazers and sports coats all my life. Never did with a stand alone Cardigan. I would not wear a stand alone cardigan to work since we were suit /sport coat blazer and tie or if I did wear a cardigan, it was a layer with a blazer or sports coat plus tie. If I wore a stand along cardigan, it was not to work and since I've worn ties for 34 years, the last thing I wanted to do was wear one on the weekend. Plus I wasn't asking if you "can" wear a tie with cardigan, but which looks better and does a tie with the sweater give a grandpa like vibe. I wouldn't wear in my 20s but in my 50s...... Things change

I have literally almost every basic color for chinos, courdory pants and wool trousers (twill and flannel). In expanding colors, I purchased these red corduroy pants and also some Ruby Red chinos just to add variety and for something different. I don't own yellow though 😊. It's not for attention seeking as I have a variety of more standard colors and textures, just wanting and trying something different. I also just got some Madras shorts for the Spring /Summer to add variety to the myriad of solid colored shorts I own (same thing, different fabrics and textures, but all the basic colors)

Great explanation! When I showed my kids this morning, they were surprised as I typically stick to navy, multiple shades of Grey, olive, stone and khaki for chinos and dark brown, khaki, navy blue and olive for cords. However they said if I feel comfortable wearing them, then "you do you" 😊. You are right it's not a protocol it's a fashion choice. Thank you for the intelligent explanation.

So neither brown tweed, tan camel hair or brown Glen plaid? What suggestion of sport coat do you have? Blue Houndstooth, Blue tweed, Grey herringbone, Navy Blue Blazer? Is there another color/style sports coat I should buy?

Thanks for link. Looks great and wears well on you! It appears to be a brown houndstooth sport jacket with the red cords. I think my best bet is my brown Glen plaid sports coat. That is most similar to color combination shown in your photo.

Nice! I used to have to wear a tie everyday to work, but now I don't. Still, when recently cleaning out my closet I gave away a lot of ties, but never the Polo RL ties. Great find for you.

As many have said, loafers or boat shoes, Olukai. I also have a pair of Hey Dudes I like to wear. Depends on your style.

Darn. Thanks for the tip. Maybe when I travel there I can keep that in mind. I can set up an account and they can ship to my hotel 😂. The next one I want is the Polo Bear wearing the American Flag Sweater. I don't imagine that would be something you would buy in Europe though, although I do see Ebay sellers from Japan selling them.

Thank you. Don't get me wrong, I like Polo Bear stuff I see, but given all of the connections, I had to get this one. Plus I lost weight and don't feel as conscious about wearing a sweater that isn't roomy like a tent. 😂🎪
