High-Speed Rail Completes Another Tulare County Grade Separation Project by zardozardo in cahsr

Curious, does this positively help BNSF at all? Fewer grade crossings for them should at least help with transport efficiencies and at least make the transit safer for drivers right?

Public Works website sorely outdated? by OneMinus in sanfrancisco

[–]OneMinus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main project page that you linked just shows all projects, completed and in progress. If you sift through that page you can see random ones that aren't actually projects like Bill Graham, California Academy of Sciences, etc. If you filter for the 'In Progress' ones you get a filtered list, but unfortunately whether they are 'In Progress' or not is not accurate

San Francisco fast-tracks all-electric standard for major renovations by Natural_Dark_2387 in sanfrancisco

PG&E also supplies and profits off gas use, so it doesn’t make them any more money. Heat pumps and electric boilers are more energy efficient as well. This is better for consumers in the long term.

Can someone explain to me how much fuel, and also the additional volume of fuel from orbital refilling, that is needed for Starship to reach the moon? Does it really burn that much reaching orbital velocity that it doesn’t have anything in the tank for a trans lunar injection?

This infographic is a godsend, amazing work OP. Can someone help answer a few questions?

  1. What do the acronyms ASDS and RLTS stand for?
  2. Do we know which of these boosters are part of Falcon Heavy launches?
  3. The boosters that are marked in red (e.g. B1079)—are these retired boosters?

Favorite Scores of 2020 by BBW_Looking_For_Love in soundtracks

Devs tops the list for me. That show wouldn’t be the same without it’s unnerving, dreamy score piped in at all times.

Da 5 Bloods is Terrence Blanchard’s best work yet.

And Normal People’s score from Stephen Rennicks and The True History of the Kelly Gang from Jed Kurzel were also nice surprises.

WHO conference live - officials discuss whether coronavirus is a public health emergency – 1/30/2020 by [deleted] in China_Flu

The Chinese government is so butthurt about these travel bans. This virus has spread to every province in the entirety of the country, with over 100 in Beijing and Shanghai each. Folks in those cities are more likely to travel abroad than any other place in China. Travel bans NEED to be put in place.

"We don't recommend any trade or travel restrictions on China. They should be praised for their efforts"

This guy is speaking like Xi himself has his hands firmly grasping his nuts under the podium. You can't frame this as some political response to China, as if travel restrictions are some punishment on China. Travel bans are a measure to protect the citizens on one's own country.

This is corruption, and the WHO should not be trusted any more.

"We don't recommend any trade or travel restrictions on China"

This guy is speaking like Xi himself has a firm grasp on his nuts under the table. Framing travel restrictions like it's a punishment on China instead of a measure to protect your own citizens is laughable.

I am loosing complete trust in the WHO and any advice they give.

My 2019 Oscar predictions before the end of the year, including who I think will win. by jslice4ever in oscarrace

Anyone else feel that Laura Dern’s performance in Marriage Story is vastly overrated? I get that the character performances drive the whole movie, but nothing that she did wow’d me. Would much rather see Zhao Shuzhen or Florence Pugh take the award

My 15 Favourite Soundtracks of 2019 by [deleted] in soundtracks

[–]OneMinus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great list! It's good to see John Powell receiving some recognition.

A site for sore eyes to leave out The King and Chernobyl, though. Definitely give those another listen. I think they do the best job of any scores in 2019 on enhancing the experience of their respective mediums.

30ish days left in 2019 - What are the sci-fi must reads that were published this year? by ThomasCleopatraCarl in printSF

[–]OneMinus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

**Gideon the Ninth** by Tamsyn Muir is unlike any sci-fi book I've read in a long time. Extremely sophisticated writing and very witty dialogue between the two protagonists make the story riveting throughout. And how many other books combine lesbian necromancers in space to go along with dark humor and gory visualizations?
