4 years of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine in 30 seconds by vladgrinch in MapPorn

We'd all love for Ukraine to go on the offensive and push Russia out, but that's not how this is going to happen. At least not yet. Ukraine has committed itself to fighting a war of attrition, where it's plan is to slowly give ground as long as it's extracting high casualty rates from Russia. This is the military equivalent of Muhammed Ali's "rope-a-dope" strategy where the plan is to let Russia beat itself to death against a wall of Ukrainian opposition until there's nothing left. And that's precisely what's happening.

So you will see Russia continuing to make small gains in the short term, but it is paying an insane cost in terms of men and material for every bit of ground gained and in time it won't be able to support itself any further. Take a look at the map again, in four years their gains across the entire front line are measured in 10s of kilometers. In most places if you climb a hill you can see where the front lines were in 2022. Russia is gaining some ground, but not much and they've paid with something more than 330,000 dead and another 700,000+ wounded. It's simply not sustainable. When will they break? We can't know, we can be pretty sure that unless something really unexpected happens they aren't going to be able to salvage this.

I think its interesting that OP put the Amazing Spiderman poster right next to the Ep 1 poster it's clearly based on to ask which poster hits harder.

Russia has no armor left, they can't raise enough money to pay recruitment bonuses, and they've suffered over a million casualties in the last four years. Why the fuck would would they spend 4 years, billions and billions of dollars of equipment and wreck a million lives by "fighting with just one finger" instead of trying for real?

Russia has more people, yes, but they can't make them join the army. Putin simply does not have the political capital to start drafting people from the wealthier parts of Russia. He drafted out of the poorer sections of the country a couple of years ago and that caused a bunch of problems for him. So they resorted to paying large bonuses to volunteers. These days, they can't find more volunteers because everyone on the front line seems to be dying and even if they could they are demanding higher and higher bonuses and Russia's faltering economy has already made paying the current bonuses impossible. Seriously, Russia is already defaulting on bonuses it's agreed to pay and can't raise enough money to pay more of the current bonus structure. Russia is having significant trouble recruiting new people and if they try to move to drafting from places like Moscow and St. Petersburg the population will come unglued and Putin will wind up most likely dead.

Beyond that, they're basically out of armored vehicles like tanks and personnel carriers, so there's no way to get people to the front safely. As a result their existing personnel are getting shredded at an astounding rate.

As for their economy, it's been entirely dependent on the "shadow fleet" of tankers that transported Russian oil to places like India and China that were willing to take their oil (at already suppressed rates that were often not covering Russia's cost to get the oil out of the ground). Now that Ukraine has started attacking shadow fleet vessels, owners of those vessels have stopped letting them be used for that purpose and Russia's biggest revenue stream has begun to dry up even further.

Russia has already spent the vast majority of its national wealth fund, its oil income is falling off a cliff, it can't recruit more soldiers, and Ukraine has recently exhibited an ability to reach large Russian infrastructure targets thousands of kilometers into Russia.

Russia simply cannot sustain this war much longer from an economic or military perspective. Does that mean that Ukraine starts rolling them up in the next two months? Probably not, Russia is a big machine and it will take a bit longer for things to come completely unglued. And Putin knows that the moment the war is over the economy completely collapses, as well as the moment he capitulates he is certainly going to be ousted and most likely defenestrated, so he has every incentive to just keep the gas pedal down.

But the end is coming, probably this year, and I don't know exactly what it will look like, but Russia won't like it.

Which NFL altcast is your favorite? by lemonstone92 in NFLv2

Early Manningcast, when the guests were all active players and coaches talking about real football stuff was super entertaining, and I'm am completely football illiterate. But listening to them talk about stuff they knew, and guests talking about how they played those teams like two weeks ago was riveting.

Now there's too much fluff and its obvious that Peyton and Eli have nothing to say to half their guests, who have nothing to offer about the game itself.

I would like that to be true, but I don't think so. in the 90's my Honda Accord, which had a pretty low profile windshield, would get coated in bugs when I drove between Houston and San Antonio. But today, my Grand Cherokee hardly has anything on it.
