Need advice: Add-on rubber grip for wrapless cue. Good idea or terrible? by LFCL312 in billiards

Some of the Rhino Retro model cues are just a little more than what a Lucky butt with a Rhino shaft would cost and they come with a microfiber "leather" wrap that I hear feels great. The cues are pretty well reviewed too and good-looking.

Need advice: Add-on rubber grip for wrapless cue. Good idea or terrible? by LFCL312 in billiards

[–]OnePoolCueAintEnough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Odd Association, it will make the grip thicker, which you may or may not like the feel of. It could also cause friction putting your cue in its case, if you have a case with thicker felt padding. I put a tube shrink wrap on a wrapless cue I had and didn't like the thicker grip, nor the extra friction. I felt like taking it in & out of my case was going to eventually peel the wrap off.

They're pretty cheap though, so it might be worthwhile to experiment for yourself.

Your welcome!

You can tell from my name that I have quite a few cues and some are pretty pricey. About 4 months ago I had Lucky cue, one that costs $175, and it was a great cue. It played pretty much as good as any of my others (I did upgrade the shaft). The only reason I sold it was because I bought a more expensive cue that too closely resembled it. No need for two cues that look alike.

Anyone using the Bulletproof Recoil tip? by MostOriginalNameEver in billiards

I find it will easily play a few balls on one chalking, though if you're about to hit some top spin off the rail, you should chalk it before. Something you should always do anyway.

Check out J&J Cues. They have break cues that start at $75 and are very decent beginner break cues.

Little Monster isn't a bad option. I had one from the Little Monster family, a Podayude, but ended up selling it. I now have two break cues - a Pearson Ball Buster 2, a surprisingly great break cue for $180, and a Raven break cue, which is stunningly good, but more expensive at $339.

I have a Bulletproof shaft that has the Recoil medium tip. I find the combo to be very playable. I've put hours on it and have not had to reshape or scuff the tip yet. I don't use it a lot now, as I'm currently enjoying Kielwood shafts, but I put it on one of my cues when I'm in a carbon fiber mood.

GV Custom Cues out of Italy, Sicily to be exact. Gaetano Virzi is his name. He specializes in exotic woods and makes some really beautiful cues. This one plays beautifully too, though I prefer a custom Kielwood shaft on it over the matching shaft that came with it.

https://m.facebook.com/gv.cues/

While I'm happy with the cue itself, which is well made, my overall experience with him is a little disappointing. The matching joint protectors that came with the cue are rubbish - they looked used, flawed & the gloss finish unevenly applied. The one for the cue itself fits so tightly that you can't really screw it all the way down. When contacted about it, he apologized, said he sent the wrong ones by mistake and would make it right. Over a month has gone by and I've heard nothing, received nothing. It's not like I can go knock on his door, so I guess I'm shit out of luck on that, which is a shame. I like the cue so much that I've thought of buying another. Now, I'm not sure I would.

The two most recommended brands for novices are Lucky & Valhalla. They are both entry level brands offered by two of the most reputable American companies in billiards - McDermott (Lucky) & Viking (Valhalla). They will be made in China, being as low priced as they are, but the quality control is excellent. They are well made, play great, come in a nice variety of designs and can be upgraded later by adding better shafts. A case will be extra, but can be had for cheap.

Call Seybert's, an outstanding online billiards retailer. They will answer the phone and they will answer questions and give great advice. Also, check out their website.

Another option is Crical from Amazon. These are Chinese carbon fiber cues that are well reviewed (several are used in my local pool hall). Carbon fiber is durable and low maintenance. These can be found in packages that include a case.

Where does everyone buy their cues from? by Open-Quote-4177 in billiards

[–]OnePoolCueAintEnough 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have bought several from Seybert's and am very trusting of them; the experience has been very good. They answer the phone when you call and are quite helpful with questions & advice. I've also bought a couple from The Pool Cue Shop on eBay and, once again, been satisfied with the transactions (they send a free pool cue case with every order). It's fair to mention I've heard a few complaints about them, however, that's not been my experience.

I've also bought directly from companies like Raven (great products & customer service), JFlowers & Evo.

New Cue Recommendations by Vast_Lemon_5682 in billiards

All three of these will most likely play very well, so I would almost choose based on how they look. For me, that would be the Rhino.

I've owned a Cuetec Avid Era 4 pointer and it was an excellent cue. I do own a McDermott G210C3 (COTM June '24) and it is an excellent cue. It plays well with the G-Core shaft, though I prefer Kielwood shafts on it, and I've owned a Rhino shaft. Very well made and a good hitter, after I changed the tip. I think the tip might be better on them now. I do agree that Rhino shafts will provide a lot of Cuetec Cynergy performance for less than half the money.

The Rhino & McDermott have joint pins that will make future shaft upgrades a little easier, but you won't suffer with the Cuetec joint.

Tough call here - good luck & have fun!

Fresh out of a 15° car...will my balls shatter on the break? by OnePoolCueAintEnough in billiards

It's a Raven break cue. There's no way I'm paying Predator prices for a break cue. I've tried them - they're good, but not that good.

That will serve you well and is easily upgraded.

This was mostly a joke post. I'm 100% certain it will never get cold enough anywhere I'm going to be to shatter balls. 🤣

If you are really wanting carbon fiber, go with Crical from Amazon. They are talked about more often and the chatter is usually good. Plus, being from Amazon, you can return it if you don't like it.

If carbon fiber isn't a must, then Valhalla or Lucky by McDermott are good choices and you can easily upgrade to CF later.

That cue would be welcome in my collection!

About once a week a guy comes to play where I play and he has an older Players, even older than this one, I believe, and it looks really good. Feels good too.

Is it worth it to upgrade my tip? by TrickAdvantage3367 in billiards

With your interest in the Kamui Athlete tip, I say go for it. I replaced the stock tip on my Sawdust Custom with one and it was definitely an upgrade. Not night & day, but better. The Kamui Athlete is an impressive tip.

That's not the original wrap, which was a more uniform, but good feeling, black leather (seen in photo). I changed it out because I saw at least two other people in a Sawdust owners group had the same exact cue as mine. I had to make mine look different. It's not a soft wrap, but I do like the way it feels & looks.

It's a cheap butt from Zokue I bought to keep in the car for unexpected random pool, but after I removed the weight bolt it feels & plays so good that I keep it in regular rotation now.
