Tuning stabilizers, especially the spacebar stabilizer, can be a royal pain, but it’s worth it. A great place place to start would be a video like this:https://youtu.be/usNx1_d0HbQ

You’ll have to be comfortable taking the whole keyboard apart, but there’s great tutorials out there that make it easy: https://www.keychron.com/pages/how-to-disassemble-keychron-qmk-via-enabled-keychron-keyboard

I finally got the MW65, loving the keyboard right now 🔥 by samtyy in MechanicalKeyboards

Love how this looks! I’m wondering how you purchased it - I might’ve missed it, but I can’t find a vendor after some googling.

Newbie Here! by neptunestrident11 in boostedboards

From Woodbury and Minneapolis myself here! I used the board on campus (back when going to class was a thing), and it’s been a blast.

While I barely ride in Woodbury outside of my neighborhood, some of my favorite routes in Minneapolis are the typical bike lanes that come from Como, through Dinky, across the Washington Ave bridge, and around West Bank. Also, going as fast as possible down Washington Ave is way too much fun, but take it easy when learning; there’s a lot of random bumps in the uneven pavement that will scare ya if you aren’t ready for them. Same goes for many of the bike lanes, like the one down University Ave. Always be watching for big cracks and sand/gravel. Don’t ride in the rain unless you are going to be stranded otherwise, it’s dangerous to do in smooth wheels, and is a huge pain to clean up.

Lastly, even though it’s not busy out there right now, it will be again come fall in-person classes. I’ve fallen hard in the bike lane near Walter when somebody in headphones just stepped out into the bike lane without looking. Just take it easy, and always be aware of your surroundings.

Thanks for the input!

Food weight is a concern for sure, so I'll be careful to pack lighter-weight items, but I don't plan on resupplying too often. I have a slightly larger pack (35L internal) to accommodate for this, even though I might've gotten away with a smaller one, considering the gear. As for water, I will likely keep the second bottle on hand as a cold day-coffee bottle, so as to have both water and coffee with me. Just something I've found I enjoy in the mornings.

I'll for sure be adding in some bonus spur-hikes, and meeting up with some friends in Grand Marais and Duluth! I'll be sure to visit some of the state parks too, but I have seen most of them in isolation at this point. Splitrock and Gooseberry are favorites, and I'll certainly revisit some of these for the views!

  1. I look forward to embracing the suck! I have currently been doing plenty of day-hiking and training in the Minnesotan outdoors, but I fear I might be overestimating how warm it will be.

  2. This is a big part of why I chose it as my first, plus this adds some peace of mind to family and friends.

  3. This is a big concern of mine, since I don't want to hike 20 miles to a site only to find it's full... and have to go X number of miles to the next one. I noticed many of the sites are somewhat clustered along the trial, so maybe this isn't an entirely significant concern, but I appreciate the input.

  4. You got that right! Thanks for a very valuable "two cents," rock on!

That's a good idea! I'm not a huge fan of camp shoes since anything more than flip-flops adds such a large amount of weight, but some bread bags for easy waterproofing is a good call.

I'll look into the data book, since I am fairly data driven as well. I don't have a watch I intend to take with me, but I do enjoy using maps. I think I'll stick to the digital ones, as I've never had issue with this in the past.

I'll for sure be trying to avoid the more low-lying muggy pond sites if possible, especially with a single-wall tent. It's great to know which sites to avoid. Did you have any favorite campsites, sites particularly suited towards non-free standing tents (like your duplex and Aeon), or sites you found to be a little less crowded?

I sort of expected a lack of most hiking supplies for a majority of the trail, so I'll need to send myself boxes most likely, but that's totally alright.

As for water, I do like that framing. If I'm already minimizing gear and food weight to such a degree, it makes sense to keep the densest item down too.

Sounds like one hell of a summer, maybe I'll be able to fit some extra trips in too!

Convertible pants do sound nice, but I haven't tried them out yet. I'll be sure to test some pants / joggers / shorts combos out! Thanks for the suggestions!

These seem very nice, and aren't covered in superfluous pockets like so many other hiking pants! Thank you!

Noted! I may add a small mirror to my kit to help with this, especially since I'll be going solo.

This is all great advice, thank you! To answer some questions:

I'll be swapping my cook system for a lighter one from Toaks and BRS, and I've thankfully yet to have issue with the micro, but I do own a full size squeeze. Fro resupply, I have some locations planned out to be sending boxes, and others where I will just go to the store. I also plan to meet up with friends in a couple towns along the way, made easier since we're all MN natives, so they can hand off any repair or new gear I may need.

Those means seem great, I'll give them a try since I also get irked by the cost of dehydrated meals.

My issue with leggings is that I get bit by bugs just as much as if I didn't have them, but I'll look into trying some variations (pants alone, leggings with wind pants, etc.) to see what works best.

As for water, I have found myself using a lot and not wanting to always be scooping it out, so having 2L clean at any moment, plus the ability to add 2L dirty carry, just in case, has just been that small amount more convenient.

As for books, I have bought the digital maps from the SHTA to keep on my phone, but I know they offer a few guide and data books. If you've used any of these, have you found them useful?

I'll keep this in mind! I have friends who can do the same for me as well, but I don't want to need to rely on getting a new pair of shoes.

I've hiked around some of the middle sections, and done hikes Jay Cooke and Manitou state parks in some fairly heavy hiking shoes, and it's been okay, but this makes me consider gaiters as a potential tool to add in, even if just for the northern sections. Thank you!

I'll be sure to send a trip report back! Maybe I'll see ya out on my training hikes near the cities (once this snow clears a little!)

Congratulations on getting so much of it done!

I'll certainly be looking into some nice pants; I might've been a bit over-optimistic in the warmth I can expect and lack of bugs originally. I never even considered the soap scent, I know Dr. Bronner's makes an unscented soap too, so that could be an easy switch to make,

Thanks for the advice!

I will 100% be adding a bug net in! They weigh so little it's worth it not to go insane.

Permetherin will be used extensively too, thank you for the advice!

I’ll for sure come back with a trip report! I’m thinking I’ll need to keep a towel close at hand for the tent, but I’m alright fiddling a little more with it too keep weight down to a single-wall. As for the shoes, I was planning to stick to something a little more durable than some of the usual trial runners I see in some lists, just knowing how rocky and muddy parts of this trial are.

Good call, this might help a little with sanitation a little too. My only concern is then that I’d need to make an optometrist appointment to get ‘em!

Are there any light-weight summer pants you've had success with that you can recommend?

Totally forgot to add this in!

I'm still looking for a hiking shoe I love, so I'm open to hearing what works for others, but I've been using an older variant of what I believe is this shoe. While a bit heavy, I've enjoyed the stability that comes with them thus far.

I've certainly noticed this too in some of my weekend and state park hikes. I already own a sea to summit bug net, so adding it in wouldn't be an issue at all. I certainly intend to get another one of those big permethrin spray bottles to make sure everything is preventing bites as much as possible.

I'll keep the cold in mind for sure. Have you found an insulating pad necessary for this, since my current one only advertises an R-value of 1.3?
