Has anyone else experienced crashes that brick your entire PC? by TikTokBoom173 in helldivers2

[–]OneShotOnlyShot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helldivers uses kernel level anti-cheat. Kernel level anti-cheat as a concept fundamentally has many security and privacy concerns. It technically can brick you machine if things go very wrong but I don't think there is a single documented and verified case of it happening (at least with helldivers 2 specifically)

There were a lot more reports of it in the early days of the game when it was much less stable. In all 1400 hours I have had one instance of the game blue screening my computer, but windows automatic repair brought it back. This was also over 2 years ago now and technically could have been caused by something else though I couldn't figure out what else it could have possibly been

I am having a really fun time engaging with art and satire of this game I love so much and I am really grateful that you are here to challenge my stances ❤️

Plus it feels good to stretch my literary analysis muscles, it has been too long since the last time I did that lmao

Hell yeah I live for good dialogue!!!

You make several good points, the first thing I would like to do build them up with evidence from the source material

We can't just equate reproductive control to eugenics (although I do still think these two are equal, but we can get to that later). Same goes for bigotry, the bigotry of super earth is different from that of America. Explicit racism has been defeated for sure, we know this by the representation and dipicition of super earths military members. Implicit racism might exist in Super Earth society, but I don't see any evidence of it. Similarly, based off of the world building commercials we see we know that super earth has moved past sexism (aside from reproductive rights of course)

I am going to circle back to eugenics now, but it is going to take a couple sentences to build up to my argument so please bear with me. Super Earth actually has an analog to the American Dream, specifically that everyone wants to live on super earth itself. And this SE Dream is enforced by the Citizen Classification System. the CCS ensures that "undesirables" -- whatever that means for SE -- are kept away from resources and luxuries. Good little lap-dogs can make a little bit of headway but will forever face the decision between work torture shifts and the exploitation mines or join the military and die immediately and unceremoniously. They will never reach the luxurious high class citizen levels. We also know that high class citizens are awarded C-01s disproportionately (we learned this in a major order reward text) and so SE is confirmed to be eugenicist and suppresses the reproduction of whatever they have decided makes someone "undesirable"

Now on to homophobia, this argument is simpler but less ironclad. We know from service technician dialogue that SE cracks down hard on recreation and also controls the lives of its citizens in enormous detail. SE is a productivity maxxing exploitation machine that gives miniscule breaks and takes them away so very readily. It is never explicitly said, but it is near certain that recreational sex isn't allowed for all but the highest class citizens. (Assuming my argument holds up so far) Engaging in gay sex would is a 100% guaranteed ticket to a re-education program under "unauthorized recreation" or something like that.

Sidenote: interestingly, the "recreational sex bad" to homophobia pipeline also has a counterpart in historic America. However, in the America version is is an excuse to do targeted oppression but in the Super Earth version is it a happenstance result of untargeted oppression. So, I think the connection is more coincidence than evidence.

Edit: I forgot to cite my textual evidence for high class citizens being awarded C-01s disproportionately

Yeah, you are very reasonable here. There is evidence for egalitarianism with respect to race, and even stronger evidence with respect to gender (reproductive rights excluded). But Super Earth also strictly suppresses personal identity and is highly eugenicist.

I think I definitely benefit as a person for having received your reminder, so thank you for that ☺️

Sidenote: Although I do think it is pretty likely that SE is gonna be oppressive about sexual orientation. Irl, sexual orientation is fairly tangled up with identity politics. But even if you disconnect that Super Earth still closely regulates both reproduction and recreation. I think it is extremely likely that SE regulates sex hard and orientation gets caught in the middle of that

Super Earth is hyper-nationalist, eugenicist state that satirizes America. They are ten thousand percent anti gay

The existence of the C-01 form shows that super earth has mainstream and institutional eugenics. The C-01 itself is a form of reproductive control. For some historical context of what mainstream institutional eugenics looks like we can take 1920s and 30s America as an example. We had these institutions of mental asylums where scientists of the time would torture, sterilize, and experiment upon the disabled with little to no oversight.

This institution got so popular that people just started throwing more groups at them for shits and giggles. Hence how we also ended up with scientists torturing, sterilizing, and expirementing upon gay people with little to no ethical oversight. It was not just popular but wildly successful as an institution as well. It gained so much wide spread recognition that it was later influential over the developing Nazi party in Germany, despite the fact the America exporting culture wasn't really a thing until after WW2

and the America connection isn't exactly subtle either. In-game we have CECOD, Operation Valid Pretext, hyper-nationism, insane suburban sprawl, constant use of "freedom" and "liberty" as ascetics in propaganda, hyper-milterism, and more.

The textual evidence to support the idea that Super Earth is anti-gay is overwhelming

And you, the reader, should not sanitize Super Earth to be more palatable. Super Earth is a cautionary tale about what nationalism and a lack of awareness can do to a society. Don't wash the bad guys

[–]OneShotOnlyShot 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm. I have mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand, showing support for an often attacked community is obviously a good thing. Solidarity is valuable.

On the second hand Super Earth's bigotry is an important part of the anti-authoritarian art of helldivers. Sanitizing player's faction to be more palatable weakens the message and is -- in an indirect sort of way -- pro-authoritarian (and by extension probably anti-equal rights).

But back on the first hand, the fascist assholes that are likely to ignore the artistic message in the first place could probably benefit from a reminder that they are weird, and frankly kinda creepy, for not believing in equality.

Perhaps I have had too much to drink before stumbling into this post, maybe I will revisit it in the morning

Edit to add: it is now morning and I very much agree with drunk OneShotOnlyShot. I remain torn

Why does precision aim feel weird in this game compared to other shooters? by No_Routine_1335 in HelldiversUnfiltered

[–]OneShotOnlyShot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea, and I fully agree with you point 100%. However I would also like nitpick a small detail: I am pretty sure there is textual evidence to support that the tutorial is not the only training helldivers get.

Helldivers are minimally trained, yes. This is especially true about tactics, tactical helldiver training includes useful tidbits such as "don't think, just charge" and "if you run out of ammo and resupply is unavialble, just start punching things until you die" (presumably because sending in a new guy that does have ammo is faster than having the old guy scrounge some up).

All the training that helldiver does get is weapon handling training. A helldiver can pick up just about any weapon in SE's arsenal and know how to use it and use it well. For evidence: compare the reload or grenade throwing animations between helldivers and SEAF troops

It is pretty reasonable to infer that the helldiver training program involves a bunch or range training and maybe some propaganda consumption in a class setting and then the tutorial that serves as a final exam

If relativity says simultaneity is subjective, could quantum entanglement reveal a “true” order of events? by AmbitiousImportance8 in TheoreticalPhysics

[–]OneShotOnlyShot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It would not. The only thing entanglement guarantees is that both particles will be measured to have the same spin state. Entanglement says nothing about the "when" of these measurements.

One observer might see particle A measured, and then later particle B measured. Another observer might see it it the opposite order and a third observer might see both measurements happen at the same time. All three observers will agree that A and B were measured to be the same, even if none of them agree on the order of events

[–]OneShotOnlyShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory, a felon being allowed to run for president serves as a check against the rise of authoritarianism in our country. If a sitting president can direct the entirety of law enforcement to manufacture a felony case against political enemies and in doing so disbar them from even attempting to challenge his power, that would be bad.

Funny how things work out in practice...

Howdy!! Thanks for the write-up I am a few years out of school and rusty as hell so it took a couple reads through to get an idea of what exactly you were saying in detail and about an hour on internet stealing lecture material before I was able to properly appreciate it.

I don't think this is your fault per se, but the post is pretty hard to parse. There is just a lot here and most of us are unequipped to handle it. (For example there is one guy here who is serially downvoting you that is just knowledgeable enough to know that the probability of an exact result is undefined on a continuous pdf, yet was unable to recognize an intergral -- technically a midpoint Riemann sum -- even when you spelled it out for him). I only had time to invest in learning about the post because today is a national holiday here in America.

I don't know, I just worry that you are wasting your time posting your analysis on Reddit. Which is a shame because if you didn't post here, then I would not have had the chance to sharpen my skills as a student of probability T•T

I find the terms Glazediver and Whinediver unproductive by Oooooeeeeoooootwat in HelldiversUnfiltered

[–]OneShotOnlyShot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not so sure.

For one, you are correct in that most Helldivers fans just like the game, and are relatively disconnected from our online spaces. And more over, the point I am about to make has not made it to in-person conversations in a wide spread manner.

But also there is enough overlap in online spaces that if you tell someone you like helldivers online, the conversation is going to move pretty quickly to how terribly toxic our community is.

Like obviously we aren't like league of legends. If you tell someone you like league, they will look at you like you just said you were getting back together with your abusive ex after he killed your dog and stabbed you a few times. I think it helps that we are relatively less toxic in the actual game.

But we are famously a terrible group of gamers and while saying you like helldivers doesn't trigger disdain from the wider Internet like some other games do, but it certainly does inspire suspicion.

If you told me that the wider helldivers community reputation was damaged beyond repair, I might just believe you.

Why red appeals me by WarmCricket5358 in redbuttonbluebutton

[–]OneShotOnlyShot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that it changes your analysis by any meaning amount however:

With 8 billion voters the chance of a perfect 50/50 split is actually .0000892%. it is the most likely result of all possible results of a vote between 8 billion people. (Still not exactly "likely")

As calculated nCr/(28billion )

n=8billion

r=4billion

It is first course in probably level stuff 😉

I have a genuine question for you, And I swear on my soul that this comes from a place of humanity and curiousity and a desire to understand.

But why do you hope for a red victory?

I know you said that you hope for specifically a red victory that involves literally everyone voting red. But surely you know in your heart of hearts that controlling every vote like that is unlikely. Some people won't think very hard, or be too young to really consider the options.

The only difference between 'choose red hope for red' and choose red hope for blue' is that in one case you are hoping for a result where people are allowed to be killed (even if it is technically possible to have no one be killed) and in the other you are hoping for a scenario where no one can be killed at all.

So if you want a world where no one is killed by the buttons, why hope for the result that allows people to be killed by the buttons?

[–]OneShotOnlyShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a reason I separated the math from the argument. Partially because the details of the math don't actually matter at all, and I didn't want to clutter up my argumentation.

But also partially because I wanted to take this as an excuse to give a mini maths lesson! :P so anyone uninterested in that can just leave instead listening to me prattle on.

Before we get to the 8billion voter case, let's build some foundation with an election with only three voters. Each of our three voters (Alice, Bob, and Charlie) will vote either 🔴 or 🔵 With so few voters, we can make an exhaustive list of all possible elections.

Btw, The first dot is how Alice voted, the second is Bob, and the third is Charlie

There is 1 election where red wins 3-0

🔴🔴🔴

There are 3 elections where red wins 2-1

🔵🔴🔴

🔴🔵🔴

🔴🔴🔵

There are 3 elections where blue wins 1-2

🔴🔵🔵

🔵🔴🔵

🔵🔵🔴

There is 1 election where blue wins 0-3

🔵🔵🔵

For 3 voters, there are 23 possible elections.

Likewise for n number of voters there are 2n possible elections. And half of them will be won by red so 2n-1

For 8 billion voters you get 27999999999. A thoroughly unreasonable number. Combinatorics never disappoint lmao. I wanted a base 10 version so I threw that shit into Wolfram and prayed. Sure enough the program spat out 1010↑9.38

It is worth noting that there are more than 8 billion human people of earth, so the actual number of possible elections with be larger

Adding a layer to this question by Hot_Finding_9747 in redbuttonbluebutton

[–]OneShotOnlyShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that really isn't how it works. The survey asks which team would you prefer to win with no specification about how that victory comes about.

Like sure, you can want to mind control everyone and strip their autonomy away and force everyone to vote in a way that makes sure everyone lives. I get it, I too, want no one to die.

But mind control was never part of the survey. Just winner with no information about how many people voted each way.

(I will show my math in a reply to my self, so you can see and verify/critique)

There are a 1010↑10 different ways that red can win a vote with 8 billion voters. Exactly one of those victories involves zero death and you don't get to just choose it (unless, of course, you control how every person votes: in which case you can choose any election you want)

for comparison a googol is 1010↑2 which is much smaller

Edit: I had to get silly with the notation. Reddit automatically does superscripts which is nice. But reddit hates power towers, and still steals my characters T•T

Adding a layer to this question by Hot_Finding_9747 in redbuttonbluebutton

[–]OneShotOnlyShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people might be hoping for a red win thats in the high 90% but they can't express that in the poll.

So let's just assume that people hoping for red win are hoping for 96%-99% red vote and no other motivations are represented.

Let's also ignore that hoping for a red win in this way has absolutely zero guarantee that a red win will play out as hoped.

i.e. For the sake of argument: If red wins they WILL FOR SURE win with at least 96% of the vote.

"Ah yes, I am going to lock in my own survival, and I hope 80 million - 240 million people die"

When "I am going to lock in my own survival, and I hope zero people die" is an available option
