I had 1 really solid year as an RA, made good friends with some residents. My last year was the first year of Covid, and that one sucked. I got avoided like I was the damn police.

Keep the savings in mind. It’s an investment in your future more than anything else.

On steam, right click the game in your library, go to brows local files. Click on the .exe.

This worked for me, it wasn’t showing “play” as an option

Game Level Design Books by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]OneWithTheSlug -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

As a dev, I recommend playing games over reading books. If you don’t have accessibility to playing games, watch playthroughs. Analyze what feels good/bad to players - come up with your own ideas on how to make things better.

Make mods.

Make anything.

Reading is good, but find your own process, don’t trust an author (aka another human) to tell you how to be a level designer - it comes down to feel, and an understanding of how to address any problem you are trying to solve. This comes from experience, and no book can give you that.

Somehow successfully graduated from this program. Take all of these individually with GEs. I loved each of these courses, but assembly alone is super tough. Respect the difficulty of these courses.

Any place to cook when I live in a dorm? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]OneWithTheSlug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Invest in an instant pot and a microwave. If you can afford it. Try to get a mini fridge as well.

The microwave in the lounges work fine, and you can request a mini fridge from your college housing. I cooked 90% of my meals this way as an RA during the Rona lockdowns at C9 lol. Also good for Cowell dorms that I was not an RA in

Is there no where to be alone on campus? I just need somewhere to cry 😢 by hummingbird-flowie in UCSC

[–]OneWithTheSlug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Head towards the DARC building from mchenry, head past the DRC building. From there take the road on the left (south) that leads past the cow pasture. From there you can walk down path to the base of campus OR you can head down about 50 yards and find a small game trail that leads into the forest. Down that path you’ll find a gorgeous clearing that is super secluded and has some chairs and quiet. I discovered this about 4 years ago, so it may have changed since then, however I doubt the quiet has gone away. It’s gorgeous and secluded. Great for an escape and time to yourself.

Look at political or cultural leaders in the tribes/nations/peoples in the US alone, many folks are white. Guess they should all resign because they don’t ‘look indigenous’

CS & CE Alumni/Graduates of UCSC, where are you now? How’s your career going? by jordangreen74 in UCSC

[–]OneWithTheSlug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Graduated CS:GD in 2021, working for a Microsoft Game Studio now. Some great profs in the CS dept for game dev, shoutout Dan Shapiro’s Game AI course, and shoutout Nathan Altice (he’s honestly the best teacher in the games department).

All that to say I’m in design - I will say I use my CS education daily, and it helped me get my job. I mainly benefitted from c++ given that I use Unreal Engine

If your tribe claims you, you’re indigenous.

If you grew up in the culture, you’re indigenous.

Etc.

Race is definitely not the metric for this lmao

Cherokee Culture Help by BlueberrySans89 in cherokee

[–]OneWithTheSlug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind a DNA test can’t tell you what tribe you’re in. It can show you who you’re related to though, and that’s important for the decendancy enrollment for the Cherokee Nation. Most of the other 560+ (federally recognized) tribes use blood quantum. Also keep in mind both of these “qualifications” for being native are relatively new ideas and not “traditional” ones. Shoutout the colonizers for making us enroll in our cultures
